25:33They do not bring you any representation but that We bring you the truth [in reply to them] and the best exposition.1

25:34Those who will be mustered [fallen] on their faces toward hell, they are the worse situated and further astray from the [right] way.

25:35Certainly We gave Moses the Book and We made Aaron, his brother, accompany him as a minister.

25:36Then We said, ‘Let the two of you go to the people who have denied Our signs.’ Then We destroyed them utterly.

25:37And Noah’s people, We drowned them when they impugned the apostles, and We made them a sign for mankind, and We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.2

25:38And ‘Ad and Thamud, and the people of Rass, and many generations between them.

25:39For each of them We drew examples, and each We destroyed utterly.

25:40Certainly they must have passed the town on which an evil shower was rained. Have they not seen it? Rather, they did not expect resurrection [to happen].3

25:41When they see you they just take you in derision: ‘Is this the one whom Allah has sent as an apostle!?

25:42Indeed he was about to lead us astray from our gods, had we not stood firm by them.’ Soon they will know, when they sight the punishment, who is further astray from the [right] way.

25:43Have you seen him who has taken his desire to be his god? Is it your duty to watch over him?

25:44Do you suppose that most of them listen or exercise their reason? They are just like cattle; indeed, they are further astray from the way.4

Commentary on this passage

Verse 37

1.In the beginning, the miracles were shown according to the demand of the community but then too the community brought ruin upon itself and the same result came forth for the community of Nuh, the Aad and Samood and also the community of Moosa and Lut (a.s.). The community of Lut (a.s.) was destroyed by a heavy deluge of stones as their character was very evil and it is clear, Allah’s religion cannot tolerate the immorality of male and female. As far as this deed is natural and inherent but it is not forgiven in law, then how can homosexuality be tolerated, when there is no base of this action and whose intention is to spread immorality and disease and nothing else.

Verse 42

2.How sad it is that mankind has turned towards disgrace and abasement, they call their idols as their Gods: say, good guidance makes them misled and deviated. O would that the believers would take lesson from it and consider an opponent as misled and a destroyer of the truth and would demonstrate opposition by following the right path with patience. But woe, the cream of society believe the misled people as their helpers and do not keep patience in the face of truth and factuality.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Being herded by the face could also be literal. It denotes degradation. It could also be metaphoric that they are being forcibly taken while their attention is still towards the world. And on the basis of some proverbs it could also denote that they are being taken to an unknown destination.

  2. 1

If the opponents are expert orators we also have the reply to everything, and much better than their arguments. Truth is never conquered by oratory of falsehood. The Lord of the worlds is the best guide. He is the greatest helper.

  3. 2

According to some people it was a well. That is why they were referred to as the People of well. Others maintain that it was a pine tree that grew in different places in the country and people used to worship it and consider it sacred.

  4. 3

It is the nation of Lut (a.s.) which was meted the most terrible punishment, because in addition to the lack of belief they committed the most dirty crime.

  5. 4

The common argument is that some people heed exhortations at one time or another and come to the right path. Worse than animals means that the animal does not have reasoning capacity so it is misled but man, in spite to having reason is unable to tread the right way. Not only this he also misleads others with him while an animal cannot mislead anyone.

  6. Benefit

Selfish desires are the worst causes of human destruction. Desires are called enemies of reason according to traditions. They are also referred to as the base of all sorrows, the opponent of religion and the worst deity on the face of the earth. It was desire alone that made the people of Nuh (a.s.) proud, the people of Aad, arrogant and the people of Lut (a.s.) homosexual and the women of the people of Ras, Lesbians. Then all their ends were identical.
