Makkan77 verses

25:12When it sights them from a distant place, they will hear it raging and roaring.1

25:13And when they are cast into a narrow place in it, bound together [in chains], they will pray for [their own] annihilation.2

25:14[They will be told:] ‘Do not pray for a single annihilation today, but pray for many annihilations!’

25:15Say, ‘Is that better, or the everlasting paradise promised to the Godwary, which will be their reward and destination?’

25:16There they will have whatever they wish, abiding [forever]—a promise [much] besought, [binding] on your Lord.

25:17On the day that He will muster them and those whom they worship besides Allah, He will say, ‘Was it you who led astray these servants of Mine, or did they themselves stray from the way?’

25:18They will say, ‘Immaculate are You! It does not behoove us to take any wali in Your stead! But You provided for them and their fathers until they forgot the Reminder, and they were a ruined lot.’

25:19So they will certainly impugn you in what you say, and you will neither be able to circumvent [punishment] nor find help, and whoever of you does wrong, We shall make him taste a terrible punishment.

25:20We did not send any apostles before you but that they indeed ate food and walked in marketplaces. We have made you a [means of] test for one another, [to see] if you will be patient and steadfast, and your Lord is all-seeing.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 18

1.The biggest fountainhead of misguidance the pleasure of world, wealth and capital. When one gets all these things, many potentialities are obtained for his misguidance and he deludes from the right path, which is the path of infidels and polytheists. When Muslims and believers obtain the worldly pleasure and wealth, they became proud and think themselves more elevated than Allah and feel that it is not obligatory to obey Allah and also see divine reflection in themselves. There are some such people in this world who give priority to worship of Allah more than their wealth and capital. If he is getting increment in service or business while the time of prayer is affected or the congregational prayer is passing or an opportunity of fasting slips from his hands, he disregards the increment of service or business and gives priority to prayer of Allah. They think, prayer is the source of increase in the world and the hereafter.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The ayat has presented the visualization of the punishment instead of giving comparisons because those believers were incapable of understanding the comparisons. They could be guided only by creating terror in their hearts.

  2. 1

Tagheez - Excitement. Zafeer - noise. That is Hen win become excited seeing them at a distance just as a hunter is happy on seeing a prey. O Allah! How terrible will be scene when Hell would express its anger and fury and the poor man will have no way to defend himself.

  3. 2

A tight place is not a small corner. Rather the whole area of Hen will seem to be tight to them and they will be forcibly made to enter it just like a nail is hammered into a wall.

  4. 3

Like the sorrows of life the poverty of the prophet is also a test for the people, seeing which rich people are deviated and deny his prophethood itself.

  5. Benefit

There is a description of Paradise in the 15th and 16th ayats because its bounties are to last forever. It is the actual destination and place of stay for the believers. It has the cure of every desire and its inmates are permanent. There is cure for every desire because the folks of Paradise cannot have an improper desire.
