Makkan118 verses

23:59and do not ascribe partners to their Lord;

23:60who give whatever they give while their hearts tremble with awe that they are going to return to their Lord1

23:61—it is they who are zealous in [performing] good works and take the lead in them.

23:62We task no soul except according to its capacity, and with Us is a book that speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged.2

23:63Indeed, their hearts are in a stupor in regard to this, and there are other deeds besides which they perpetrate.

23:64When We seize their affluent ones with punishment, behold, they make entreaties [to Us].

23:65‘Do not make entreaties today! Indeed, you will not receive any help from Us.

23:66Certainly My signs used to be recited to you, but you used to take to your heels,

23:67being disdainful of it, talking nonsense in your nightly sessions.’

23:68Have they not contemplated the Discourse, or has anything come to them [in it] that did not come to their forefathers?

23:69Is it that they do not recognize their apostle, and so they deny him?

23:70Do they say, ‘There is madness in him’? No, he has brought them the truth, and most of them are averse to the truth.

23:71Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth would have surely fallen apart [along] with those who are in them. Indeed, We have brought them their Reminder, but they are disregardful of their Reminder.

23:72Do you ask a recompense from them? Your Lord’s recompense is better, and He is the best of providers.3

23:73Indeed you invite them to a straight path,

23:74and those who do not believe in the Hereafter surely deviate from the path.

Commentary on this passage

If truth would be limited to the acceptance of verbal words of God and the message of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) would be complete in the belief of La Ilaha Illallah, the whole world would then readily agree with this truth and no voice of rebellion would be raised from any comer, but the trouble is this that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) brought the truth that had faith, deeds and sincerity, political economy, socialism, political science, community development and the solution to all questions of life were included in it and paying homage to it meant that all people would have to be aware of their personal principles, faith and deeds and this was impossible for the sinful of the community such as we can see in present time that people who are the torch bearers come forward to raise the monotheistic slogan. But when the time comes for practice and reformation they start disregarding the former customs and usage and oppose it and are concerned with the acquisition of the life, wealth and prestige of a preacher. Perhaps the time has changed and this is the greatest miracle of the Holy Quran that all kinds of solutions of every era are present in its statements and it is not worn out and outmoded at any time.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It should be clear that truth cannot obey the selfish desires because first of all there is contradiction in desires. Secondly, some of the desires are based on corruption. Thirdly, desires only view one aspect of the matter and they make us unaware of other aspects while truth cares for the common good.

  2. 1

It is the pinnacle of faith that in spite of doing good deed man is fearful of the Hereafter, and not that despite doing no good deed he considers Paradise to be his personal property.

  3. 2

Was’at - It is a stage lesser than power. That is, Allah has made was’at (capability) the criteria for religious duties and not strength. If he had done so there would have been increase in the prohibitions and obligations because human beings definitely possess more strength than the duties they are obliged to perform. Here Kitab denotes the scroll of deeds in which all the deeds are accurately mentioned and there is no scope of injustice.

  4. 3

Kharaj - Expenses. Kharaaj is the wealth presented to people of high status. The Almighty intends to say that when you have been given Kharaaj why do you need expenses? The worldly wealth can be considered an expense but it does not deserve to be considered Kharaaj. The Love of the near Kindered (Mawaddatul Qurba) is a Kharaaj and much more higher than expense.

  5. Benefit

Saameran Tahjuroon shows that the people of falsehood are cowardly and shameless. They talk during the night and use foul language.
