Makkan118 verses

23:43No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.

23:44Then We sent Our apostles successively. Whenever there came to a nation its apostle, they impugned him, so We made them follow one another [to extinction] and We turned them into folktales. So away with the faithless lot!

23:45Then We sent Moses and Aaron, his brother, with Our signs and a manifest authority

23:46to Pharaoh and his elites; but they acted arrogantly and they were a tyrannical lot.1

23:47They said, ‘Shall we believe two humans like ourselves, while their people are our slaves?’

23:48So they impugned the two of them, whereat they were among those who were destroyed.

23:49Certainly We gave Moses the Book so that they might be guided,

23:50and We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and sheltered them in a level highland with flowing water.

23:51O apostles! Eat of the good things and act righteously. Indeed I know best what you do.2

23:52Indeed this community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so be wary of Me.

23:53But they fragmented their religion among themselves, each party boasting about what it had.

23:54So leave them in their stupor for a while.

23:55Do they suppose that whatever aid We provide them in regard to wealth and children [is because]

23:56We are eager to bring them good? No, they are not aware!

23:57Indeed those who are apprehensive for the fear of their Lord,

23:58and believe in the signs of their Lord,

Commentary on this passage

Islam never forbids eating and drinking and to lead a good life. It on1y demands that a man should eat pure diet and should not sit idle but do some good act so that this diet should not become the aim of long life and its status should be mediation of act. Such as quoted in the condition of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). He never refused the pure diet to his followers, on the contrary, the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) also was eating from it and expressed his choice and his intention that Sufism and monastic life should not become customary law in the community, otherwise Islam would be ruined. Islam has come to solve the difficulty of life and solve the troubles. Islam has not to obstruct the mortal life of people and those who instruct of this and have made their tom clothes and impure diet their mark, in fact they are away from the soul of Islam and these people are the source of destruction of Islam. Islam ordains the responsible people of Islam that they should take care of the evident lifestyle of people and should not be separate from them. So that people would get hearty satisfaction and should not become broken hearted. But this is another question, besides this monastic life has no concern to dissension from the world.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The Almighty Allah bestowed Moosa (a.s.) with the signs and also the manifest power. According tocommentators the signs denote the miracles and Sultan-e-Mubeen are the intellectual and logical arguments. Others are of the opinion that ‘Ayaat’ are minor miracles and the Sultan-e-Mubeen are the greater miracles of the staff and the glowing arm.

  2. 1

People belonging to affluent class in all ages always abhor to submit themselves to religious guides, although how foolish was the statement of Firon. That since the people worshipped him he cannot bring faith on Moosa (a.s.). The question is that if a person like you can become a god why can’t he become a Prophet?

  3. 2

This shows that the impetus to perform good deeds is created when one only onsumes pure food. If a person is nurtured on impure diet and impurity flows through his blood, sometime or the other it will have negative effect on his action. People who feed on haraam salary do not forsake their profession because the effect of haraam food prevents them from the straight path.

  4. Benefit

Khashya is the initial aspect of fear and Ishfaq is its practical aspect and for both it is necessary that the source of fear should be respect and honour and not tyranny and cruelty.
