22:47They ask you to hasten the punishment, though Allah will never break His promise. Indeed a day with your Lord is like a thousand years by your reckoning.1
22:48To how many a town did I give respite while it was doing wrong! Then I seized it, and toward Me is the destination.
22:49Say, ‘O mankind! I am only a manifest warner to you!’
22:50As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, for them will be forgiveness and a noble provision.
22:51But as for those who contend with Our signs, seeking to frustrate [their purpose], they shall be the inmates of hell.
22:52We did not send any apostle or prophet before you but that when he recited [the scripture] Satan interjected [something] in his recitation. Thereat Allah nullifies whatever Satan has interjected, and then Allah confirms His signs, and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.2
22:53That He may make what Satan has thrown in a test for those in whose hearts is a sickness and those whose hearts have hardened. Indeed the wrongdoers are steeped in extreme defiance.3
22:54[And also for the reason] that those who have been given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, and so they may have faith in it, and their hearts may be humbled before Him. Indeed Allah guides those who have faith to a straight path.
22:55Those who are faithless persist in their doubt about it, until either the Hour overtakes them suddenly, or they are overtaken by the punishment of an inauspicious day.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 52
1.Some scholars and commentators have illustrated a nice proof of what is surely their misguidance: Once Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was reciting the Surah Najm and when he reached the statement regarding idols, Shaitan gave him new inspiration so the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said two sentences in his praise. So Allah at once made His Prophet know, that do not be afraid. It happens thus with all Prophets and We have rejected the Satanic revelations and made our Ayats firm. These poor people in narrating this story did not care to think if it had been so, then who would have trusted the word of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and how strong is a God who cannot overpower Shaitan before he overpowers His Apostle but when Shaitan overpowers him and Apostle makes the mistake then Allah challenges him and upsets his plans. It is manifest that if this kind of support becomes the reason of Shaitan’s power and would make Apostle untrustworthy then this support is useless to everyone. The truth is that the Apostle desires that the world be obedient to Allah and Shaitan always obstructs the way and Allah restrains this planning and always supports His Apostles and his preaching is always efficacious against Shaitan and has no concern with this forged story.

Benefit
A day equal to a thousand years could be interpreted to mean that in the view of Allah day and years are one and the same. Also that you may take thousand years to do something while Allah can do it in a day. It is also possible that the Day of Judgement shall indeed be long.
- 1
This demand of urgency is a type of ridicule. That if the punishment is imminent why does it not befall immediately? The Almighty announced that His promise is true and urgency or delay has no effect upon it.
- 2
Prophet and Messenger both are the representatives of Allah. The only difference is that those who receive heavenly messages are Prophets even though they might not be obliged to convey these messages. But those who are obliged to convey the divine revelations to the people are Messengers.
- 3
Satanic revelations can affect those educated and learned people whose hearts have defects and minds are crooked. Or it is effective on the ignorant people whose hearts are filled with ignorance and bias.
- *
Satanic instigations have no effect on the Prophets although it is the aim of Shaitan to put hurdles in the way of all their plans. While the help of the Lord of worlds enables them to defeat the aims of Satan.
