Madinan78 verses

22:38Allah will indeed defend those who have faith. Indeed Allah does not like any ingrate traitor.

22:39Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and Allah is indeed able to help them

22:40—those who were expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said, ‘Allah is our Lord.’ Had not Allah repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which Allah’s Name is much invoked. Allah will surely help those who help Him. Indeed Allah is all-strong, all-mighty.1

22:41Those who, if We granted them power in the land, will maintain the prayer, give the zakat, bid what is right and forbid what is wrong. And with Allah rests the outcome of all matters.

22:42If they impugn you, the people of Noah had impugned before them and ‘Ad and Thamud,

22:43[as well as] the people of Abraham and the people of Lot,

22:44and the inhabitants of Midian, and Moses was also impugned. But I gave the faithless a respite, then I seized them and how was My rebuttal!2

22:45How many towns We have destroyed when they had been wrongdoers! So they lie fallen on their trellises, their wells neglected and their ruined palaces!

22:46Have they not travelled through the land so that they may have hearts by which they may exercise their reason, or ears by which they may hear? Indeed, it is not the eyes that turn blind, but it is the hearts in the breasts that turn blind!3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 38

1.As a matter of fact this trouble is necessary for the creed of life, otherwise faith would become a source of business. But besides this, Allah helps His people and sends blessings on them otherwise their existence would be destroyed from the face of the earth.

Verse 39

2.The polytheists harassed the Muslims in Mecca a great deal and often they were ready for dispute with them but the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) prevented his followers from taking any action against them and instructed them continuously for patience to the extent that Allah has forbidden retaliation in about seventy verses of the Holy Quran. After that, when Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) came to Medina and saw the condition of people of Medina then Allah ordained war and this was the first general permission of war which is mentioned in Surah Hajj and this is a sign that there is no difference between Hajj and religious war and one can raise a slogan in the gathering of Hajj. It is also a good chance to make Muslims alert for religious war, just as Allah has himself given permission for religious war in Surah Hajj.

Verse 41

3.Allah, the Creator of the world has promised to help the virtuous. Virtuous those who never forget Allah and remember to pay Zakat and keep up prayer in individual life and obey and guide people to the right path. One who neglects it cannot help Allah’s religion and also Allah has not promised for help of any kind to him. This opinion is seen in the life of Muslims and can be observed adequately in their misfortune and disgrace.

  4. Benefit

In the discussion of places of worship of other religions, the Quran mentions the Masjid and the Allah’s remembrance that is carried out in Masjids. This is to drive home the point that remembrance of Allah that is performed in the Masjids is not found in any other faith. It is a great virtue of Islam that instead of according importance to the building it emphasizes on the actual action and announces its importance.
