22:16Thus have We sent it down as manifest signs, and indeed Allah guides whomever He desires.

22:17Indeed Allah will indeed judge between the faithful, the Jews, the Sabaeans, the Christians, the Magians and the polytheists on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is witness to all things.1

22:18Have you not regarded that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth prostrates to Allah, as well as the sun, the moon, and the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals and many humans? And many have come to deserve the punishment. Whomever Allah humiliates will find no one who may bring him honour. Indeed Allah does whatever He wishes.2

22:19These two contending groups contend concerning their Lord. As for those who are faithless, cloaks of fire will be cut out for them, and boiling water will be poured over their heads,

22:20with which their skins and entrails will fuse,

22:21and there will be clubs of iron for them.

22:22Whenever they desire to leave it out of anguish, they will be turned back into it [and told]: ‘Taste the punishment of the burning!’

22:23Indeed Allah will admit those who have faith and do righteous deeds into gardens with streams running in them, adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their dress therein will be silk.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 17

1.Let the people of different opinions become intimate friends but they will be separated from each other on the Resurrection Day and will be judged according to their faith and belief. It is depressing that each particle, be it lifeless intones the name of God and bows down its head by His orders and a man has become so proud and arrogant that he does not prostrate before His God. Ignorant, illiterate and lifeless particles are better than the erudite.

Verse 19

2.Pious and infidels may mean common people whose details are mentioned in the following Ayat or may be particular persons such as it is stated in Tafseer Tabari that the two parties of Battle of Badr, Utba, Shaiba and Walid were in one side and their opposites were Obaid Bin Alwaris, Hamza Bin Abdul Muttalib and Ali Bin Abi Talib (a.s.) and Allah made them succeed over the hypocrites and sent an army without arms that overpowered the well-equipped army and in this way they were defeated against the strength of faith and belief.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The Majoos are mentioned only in one place here in Quran. They are different from Zoroastrians. ‘They’ had a prophet as well as a book. They killed their prophet and burnt the book. The Sabeans were also the community of some prophet according to some commentators. They are mentioned along with the polytheists.

  2. 1

The star worshippers are not absolutely atheist and irreligious. They accept the existence of god and believe in the influence of the stars. They consider stars to be partners of God.

  3. 2

The prostration of lifeless objects according to commentators is in the meaning of natural obedience. That they will follow the way indicated without any refusal. However, according to some philosophers not a single particle of the universe is without perception. And every particle is busy in the praise of God, depending upon its perception and understanding. They all are prostrating before God. There is no need to consider it symbolic prostration.

  4. *

Alam Tara in the ayat denotes knowledge that the destined prostration is not deserving of right. ‘Man fees Samawaat’ are the angels and their prostration is Tashrii (commanded by Allah) as apparent from other ayats. ‘Man til Arz’ are the angels of the earth or the human beings which is further elaborated by ‘Kathiram Minan Naas’. The prostration of the heaven is under the discussion of the stars and the obedience of the earth is with reference to the mountain. Thus the whole Universe is in a prostration, natural or commanded.
