22. Al-Hajj · The Pilgrimage

Madinan78 verses

22:7and because the Hour is bound to come, there is no doubt in it, and Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.

22:8Among the people are those who dispute concerning Allah without any knowledge or guidance, or an enlightening Book,*1

22:9turning aside disdainfully to lead [others] astray from the way of Allah. For such there is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of the burning:2

22:10‘That is because of what your hands have sent ahead, and because Allah is not tyrannical to the servants.’

22:11And among the people are those who worship Allah on the [very] fringe: if good fortune befalls him, he is content with it; but if an ordeal visits him he makes a turnabout, to become a loser in the world and the Hereafter. That is manifest loss.3

22:12He invokes besides Allah that which can bring him neither benefit nor harm. That is extreme error.

22:13He invokes someone whose harm is surely likelier than his benefit. An evil ally indeed, and an evil companion!4

22:14Allah will indeed admit those who have faith and do righteous deeds into gardens with streams running in them. Indeed Allah does whatever He desires.

22:15Whoever thinks that Allah will not help him in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch a rope to the ceiling and hang himself, and see if his artifice would remove his rage.5

Commentary on this passage

Verse 8

1.There are three important media for gaining knowledge of God (1) Observation and experimentation by the medium of sensory perception (2) Recognition of works of philosophy and logic etc. (3) Revelation of Allah from the invisible world. The Holy Quran has pointed out towards this point, those who do not reflect nor contemplate, revelation or the Book has not descended on them and they have no right to discuss about Allah.

Verse 11

2.Indeed these are the kind of people present today. They are concerned with the weakness of faith, poor reinforcement and profits. They assume if Allah, Prophets and Imams fulfill their desires then and only then will Allah. Prophet and Imams are considered supreme by them for sacrifice in the cause. But if their wishes remain unfulfilled or if Allah or Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) demand Khums and Zakat, it seems strange to them that instead of aid, there is a demand for Zakat or Khums. This manner of thought points towards hidden apostasy on which the cover of Islam has been laid.
