20:98Indeed your God is Allah. There is no god except Him. He embraces all things in [His] knowledge.’
20:99Thus do We relate to you some accounts of what is past. Certainly, We have given you a Reminder from Ourselves.1
20:100Whoever disregards it shall bear a burden [of punishment] on the Day of Resurrection,2

20:102—the day the Trumpet will be blown; on that day We shall muster the guilty with blind eyes.3
20:103They will whisper to one another: ‘You have stayed only for ten [days].’
20:104We know best what they will say, when the smartest of them in approach will say, ‘You stayed only a day!’

20:108On that day they will follow the summoner without zigzagging. Their voices will be muted before the All-beneficent, and you will hear nothing but a murmur.
20:109Intercession will not avail that day except from him whom the All-beneficent allows and approves of his word.
20:110He knows what is before them and behind them, though they do not comprehend Him in their knowledge.
20:111All faces shall be humbled before the Living One, the All-sustainer, and those who bear [the burden of] wrongdoing will fail.
20:112But whoever does righteous deeds, being faithful, will neither fear any injustice or disparagement.
20:113Thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran and We have paraphrased the warnings in it variously so that they may be Godwary, or it may prompt them to remembrance.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 103
1.Allah knows well what is the outcome of this matter and why these estimations are being discussed. Actually it seems that people who are leading blissful lives, feel that the Resurrection Day is very near and they have obtained only 10 days in the world. That, is why the wise people have said that 10 days are more than enough. You have spent only one day in the world and the importance life of the world is not more than one day. The Resurrection Day is the original day and we will have to tolerate it forevermore.
We should know that there are some possibilities for intercession on the Doomsday. This is another thing that to keep hope in everyone, high or low, is only ignorance and foolishness. Allah’s permission is necessary for intercession and for interceding, a pleasing conduct is necessary. It means that those who are the seekers of Allah’s favor and the buyers and who do not hope in anyone other than Allah can intercede on the Reckoning Day. One who follows the others cannot be successful on the day of judgement.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
Benefit
Ashra is the first unit of tens and Yaum is the first unit of ones. That is why the one who said Yaum was considered more correct, because the magnitude of Barzakh is much less compared to Qiyamat.
- 1
Zikr is Quran. It contains all the religious truths and it is the best means of Allah’s remembrance.
- 2
Deviation from Quran can be in faith and action and the result of both of them is terrible as the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has said that one who makes the prohibited things of Quran legal has no faith in the Quran and he shall be included among those who have deviated.
- 3
Some people think it denotes blue eyes which are usually found among Romans and they are considered evil, as they are Christians. Actually there is no mention of Romans, here. ‘Zarq’ actually means discolored, whether blue or any other. The infidels shall indeed be in bad colour on the Day of Qiyamat.
Benefit
It should be clear that intercession is an established belief of Islam which cannot be denied. The only thing necessary is the kindness and a gentle word of the intercessor. Intercession is not an invitation to sin. It is the assurance to the doers of serious sins to save them from despair. As taught to Hajib Tehrani in dream by Amirul Mornineen (a.s.): ‘O Hajib if the affair is with Ali, then at least respect the face of Ali and commit less sins.’
