20:77We revealed to Moses, [saying], ‘Set out with My servants at night, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea. Do not be afraid of being overtaken, and have no fear [of getting drowned].*1
20:78Then Pharaoh pursued them with his troops, whereat they were engulfed by what engulfed them of the sea.
20:79Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.
20:80O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We appointed with you a tryst on the right side of the Mount and We sent down to you manna and quails:
20:81‘Eat of the good things We have provided you, but do not overstep the bounds therein, lest My wrath should descend on you, and he on whom My wrath descends certainly perishes.

20:83[God said,] ‘O Moses, what has prompted you to hasten ahead of your people?’

20:84He said, ‘They are close upon my heels, and I hurried on to You, my Lord, that You may be pleased.’3
20:85He said, ‘Indeed We tried your people in your absence, and the Samiri has led them astray.’
20:86Thereupon Moses returned to his people, indignant and grieved. He said, ‘O my people! Did your Lord not give you a true promise? Did the period [of my absence] seem too long to you? Or did you desire that your Lord’s wrath should descend on you and so you failed your tryst with me?’

Commentary on this passage
It is a great surprise, that this community despite the great favors from Allah, safety from the wickedness of Firon, the cleaving of the sea, the provision of foods like manna and salwa and revelation of a book like Taurat, the people became misled. It was soon that instead of goodness, even the basic faith in Allah’s Unity became the target of misguidance and the recognition of Allah could not remain safe. This is the reason that one Jew asked Ali (a.s.): It is very surprising that differences have cropped up among the Muslims after the demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). Ali (a.s.) replied - Divergence started among Muslims after the death of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) but not regarding him and see your attitude that your legs had not yet dried from the water of the Nile and while you demanded of your Prophet to fashion a God for you akin to others that you all could worship it. This state of affairs is very much more surprising than that of Muslims.

Benefit
There is repeated mention of fear and terror in the 77th ayat so that the fear of Firon is also expelled as also the fear of drowning. Even though the people of Moosa (a.s.) were terrified on seeing the army of Firon and shouted “We are overtaken,” this was the first blot on companionship of a prophet. That inspite of being with the Prophet they were overcome by fear and did not have faith in divine help.
