Commentary on this passage

According to many writers, Moosa (a.s.) became afraid at the sight of the magic of magicians though this is absolutely wrong. As Moosa (a.s.) knew the factuality of magic, no question arises of Moosa’s (a.s.) fear. Indeed he was afraid only that people would go astray and Firon’s magic would attack them. That is why Allah gave assurance of His greatness and did not give reference of magic. Be it known that Moosa (a.s.) asked the magicians to enchant first and this points out towards two things. First of all the believers of Allah do not take initiate action uptill the last moment and repel the attacks of invaders. Secondly it was not an invitation to show magic but it was an announcement of indifference and supremacy that you cast down your magic as you like. It will not bear effect on my health. If I would be even a little affected by your magic I would not challenge you in this indifference manner.
