2. Al-Baqara · The Cow

Madinan286 verses

2:70They said, ‘Invoke your Lord for us that He may clarify for us what she may be. Indeed all cows are much alike to us, and if Allah wishes we will surely be guided.’

2:71He said, ‘He says, She is a cow not broken to till the earth or water the tillage, sound and without blemish.’ They said, ‘Now have you come up with the truth!’ And they slaughtered it, though they were about not to do it.1

2:72And when you killed a soul, and accused one another about it—and Allah was to expose what you were concealing—2

2:73We said, ‘Strike him with a piece of it:’ thus does Allah revive the dead, and He shows you His signs so that you may exercise your reason.3

2:74Then your hearts hardened after that; so they are like stones, or even harder. For there are some stones from which streams gush forth, and there are some of them that split, and water issues from them, and there are some that fall for the fear of Allah. And Allah is not oblivious of what you do.

2:75Are you then eager that they should believe you, though a part of them would hear the word of Allah and then they would distort it after they had understood it, and they knew [what they were doing]?

2:76When they meet the faithful, they say, ‘We believe,’ and when they are alone with one another, they say, ‘Do you recount to them what Allah has revealed to you, so that they may argue with you therewith before your Lord? Do you not exercise your reason?’4

Commentary on this passage

Verse 73

1.According to some traditions there was a quarrel regarding the marriage of a lady who married a man who was later killed by one afhis opponents and his body was thrown in another tribe and Ihis started the turmoil. At last the argument reached such seriousness that the price of a cow was fixed to be equal to the gold that would fill its skin. This price was obtained by a believing man. Which means that rivalry was the first sin, murder the second crime and the payment of such a high price was the third punishment. Allah gives all the benefits to a religious person and bestows sustenance to righteous people in different ways. He benefits the believers through the rivalry of those who cause harm.

Verse 75

2.The Rabbis used to delete the attributes of the Prophet (s.a.) from Taurat so that they do not lose their hold over the disciples. In the present day also those who have the mentality of the Jews distort the facts to retain their control over the common people.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 73rd ayat proves that Allah can make anything an instrument of enlivening the dead. There is no reason why one should deny it or be surprised of it.

  2. 1

Dhalool: One who acts with ease and mildness.

  3. 2

Dara: It means to ward off or defend. Each one them were trying to transfer his trouble to others.

  5. 4

Here Fath means order and judgment. Our Lord judge berween us and our people by truth.

  6. Benefit

The naming of this Surah ‘Cow’ indicates that argumentation and excessive disputes with regard to divine commands is a very serious crime. The Almighty Allah desired to preserve this incident so that people in future would take a lesson from it and refrain from arguments about the command of Allah.

Benefit: There was a group among the Jews that narrated the prophecies regarding the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) revealed in the Taurat. This group was vehemently restrained from propagating the truth. The Holy Quran has revealed this point that in every age the propagators of truth are restricted so that people of truth may not consider it a proof. This is a special trait of the Jews that has been adopted by some Muslims.
