Makkan98 verses

19:39Warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided, while they are [yet] heedless and do not have faith.

19:40Indeed We shall inherit the earth and whoever there is on it, and to Us they shall be brought back.*

19:41And mention in the Book Abraham. Indeed, he was a truthful man and a prophet.1

19:42When he said to his father, ‘Father! Why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and is of no avail to you in any way?2

19:43Father! Indeed a knowledge has already come to me, which has not come to you. So follow me that I may guide you to a right path.

19:44Father! Do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan is disobedient to the All-beneficent.

19:45Father! I am indeed afraid that a punishment from the All-beneficent will befall you, and you will become Satan’s accomplice.’

19:46He said, ‘Abraham! Are you renouncing my gods? If you do not desist, I will stone you. Get away from me for a long while.’

19:47He said, ‘Peace be to you! I shall plead with my Lord to forgive you. Indeed, He is gracious to me.3

19:48I dissociate myself from you and whatever you invoke besides Allah. I will supplicate my Lord. Hopefully, I will not be disappointed in supplicating my Lord.’

19:49So when he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each We made a prophet.

19:50And We gave them out of Our mercy, and conferred on them a worthy and lofty repute.

19:51And mention in the Book Moses. Indeed he was exclusively dedicated [to Allah], and an apostle and prophet.

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 41

1.Ibrahim (a.s.) was honest (Sadiq) thus he spoke the truth and clarified the factual position regarding the idols and invited Azar to accept Divine religion so that it becomes expressly clear that the Sadiq raises his voice against idol worship and he himself does not worship idols.

2.The most excellent of ways to condemn idol worship is to quantify the chastisement as the chastisement of the Beneficent. It is also made evident that idol worship is such an abominable act that even the Beneficent Lord is inclined to chastise. What more can we say of the Mighty Subduer?

Verse 49

3.The fact remains that no sacrifice in the way of God is ever wasted. When Ibrahim (a.s.) declined idol worship and abstained from the idol worshippers Allah did not keep him isolated. On the contrary Allah bestowed prophets like Ishaq and Yaqoob (a.s.) in his progeny and established a link of pure and chaste offspring.

Verse 51

4.When the sincerity of a slave reaches its zenith, God makes his authenticity as sincerity itself and converts it to an authoritative standard.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

It is said about the 40th ayat that it mentions Qiyamat, But it would render ilaina yarjaoon (towards us they return), meaningless. If it denotes the destruction of the world the phrase Min Alaiha (from upon it) becomes meaningless. And some people have joined both the phrases though there is Waav in between. This implies that ‘we are the inheritor of the earth and also the occupants of the earth.’ Apparently there is no doubt in it.

  2. 1

Sadeeq is the most exalted position in truthfulness.

  3. 2

It is established that Azar was an idolater and the father of Ibrahim (a.s.) was Tarukh. He was a monotheist. However, Ibrahim (a.s.) addressed Azar four times as father that he might come to the right path.

  4. 3

This is the pinnacle of the moral behavior of Ibrahim (a.s.), that he was speaking of stoning while Ibrahim (a.s.) is giving a message of peace, so that he may soften and that it could be a lesson for the future generations that in the path of Allah one should have a sweet tongue. There is no scope of harsh manners in this.

  5. Benefit

The holy ayats teach the method of speaking with the people of falsehood, following the path of the people of knowledge and the description of the selected ones of Allah. All these are the best methods of character building.
