Makkan98 verses

19:12‘O John!’ [We said,] ‘Hold on with power to the Book!’ And We gave him judgement while still a child,

19:13and a compassion and purity from Us. He was Godwary

19:14and good to his parents, and was not self-willed or disobedient.

19:15Peace be to him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive!1

19:16And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to an easterly place.

19:17Thus did she seclude herself from them, whereupon We sent to her Our Spirit and he became incarnate for her as a well-proportioned human.2

19:18She said, ‘I seek the protection of the All-beneficent from you, should you be Godwary!’

19:19He said, ‘I am only a messenger of your Lord that I may give you a pure son.’

19:20She said, ‘How shall I have a child seeing that no human being has ever touched me, nor have I been unchaste?’

19:21He said, ‘So shall it be. Your Lord says, ‘‘It is simple for Me.’’ And so that We may make him a sign for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a matter [already] decided.’

19:22Thus she conceived him, then withdrew with him to a distant place.

19:23The birth pangs brought her to the trunk of a date palm. She said, ‘I wish I had died before this and become a forgotten thing, beyond recall.’3

19:24Thereupon he called her from below her [saying,] ‘Do not grieve! Your Lord has made a spring to flow at your feet.4

19:25Shake the trunk of the palm tree, freshly picked dates will drop upon you.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 16

1.Subsequent to the summary introduction of Yahya and Zakariya (a.s.), the actual narrative begins, the explanation initiating from the conditions surrounding the birth of Hazrat Isa (a.s.), as it had been with the narrative of the birth of Yahya (a.s.).

Maryam (a.s.) was in an isolated corner of the house, secluded from the members of her family and as maintained by some exegetical writers was bathing. which is not mentioned in the Ayah. when the Angel appeared to her as a man. Her condition was the same as the condition of chaste women in such circumstance. She referred to abstinence and fear of Allah in view of her own helplessness. The Angel too explained his arrival on the command of the Lord and revealed to her the bestowal of a child. Maryam (a.s.) expressed surprise over the birth of a child without a father. The angel responded that God was the Creator of means and was not subservient to them and then bestowed her with the child. The Angel blew on her breast and she became pregnant. As the time of birth neared, it brought with itself another dilemma and she stated what chaste and pure women say. But the Bestower of Honor and Esteem heeds not the mockery and ridicule of people and makes all the necessary arrangements. Thus, He made all necessary provision for Maryam (a.s.) and she became a mother.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The ayats have mentioned the following qualities of Yahya (a.s.). He was appointed a prophet during childhood. Allah bestowed him a special favor He was bestowed a pure soul. He became pious. He was good to the parents. He was not cruel to fellow beings. He never intended to inflict harm. He became deserving of peace on three occasions on which the life and the hereafter of man is decided. The mention of his numerous virtues and the continuous peace bestowed on him indicates his exalted status. As mentioned in Qisasul Ambiya the ruler of Palestine, Herudomas fell in love with his niece and decided to marry her, Yahya (a.s.) gave the verdict that this marriage was illegal. One day he resolved to marry her but she demanded the severed head of Yahya (a.s.) as her dower. The king killed Yahya (a.s.) and this was mentioned by Imam Husain (a.s.) in his journey to Karbala that the degradation of this world is so severe that the head of Yahya (a.s.) was presented to a wanton.
