Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

2.In this auspicious Surah, the Holy Quran has mentioned about the birth of a child in Zakaria’s house before it mentions regarding Maryam (a.s.). So that people recognize that Allah is not dependent on circumstances and means in the system of creation. If He can bestow a child upon Zakariya (a.s.) in his mature age of 99 whereas his wife was barren and aged. So also He can originate a child for Maryam (a.s.) without a husband. For this very reason, He caused Zakariya (a.s.) to state that it is very difficult for a child to take birth in an old man’s house from his sterile wife and responded that nothing is impossible for Allah. At least the source of an old man and old woman is present at the time. He is indeed the originator of existence from nothingness, then how is mere creation difficult for Him. The prayer of Zakariya (a.s.) clarified the aspect that Prophets of Allah aspire for a child even in matters of worldly inheritance so that the wealth may not be destroyed. The Faithful should similarly implore Allah and should impart training, which in conclusion refrains the successor from damage and destruction to property.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 2

In some traditions these words indicate the most beautiful names of Allah (Asmaa-e-Husna). Ka is for Kafi, Ha is for Haadi, Ya is for Wali, Ain is for Aalim and Saad is for Sadiqul Waad. Other traditions state Kaf is for Karbala, Ha is for Halakat (massacre), Ya is for Yazeed, Ain is for Atash (thirst) and Saad is for Sabr (Patience). And that is why Imam Husain (a.s.) often mentioned Yahya (a.s.) during his journey to Karbala.

  2. 3

Mawali: Cousins that were the mischief-mongers of Bani Israel. They were susceptible to destroy the inheritance. It is obvious that this inheritance is not prophethood as it is not proved to be a danger. It was the property left by Zakariya (a.s.) that was expected to be destroyed. And this is a best proof of the inheritance of the prophets.

  3. 4

This is not a doubt on the part of Zakariya (a.s.) regarding divine power. Rather it is the announcement of Allah’s power by the mention of the existing circumstances. To speak about oneself in this way has been customary in every language, and in this way it is aimed to shows ones Lordship more than ones worth. Benefit: That Yahya (a.s.) alone had the name shows that he was incomparable and that is why the condition of ‘before’ is imposed.
