14:6When Moses said to his people, ‘Remember Allah’s blessing upon you when He delivered you from Pharaoh’s clan who inflicted a terrible torment on you, and slaughtered your sons and spared your women, and in that there was a great test from your Lord.
14:7And when your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely enhance you [in blessing], but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is indeed severe.” ’1
14:8And Moses said, ‘Should you be faithless,—you and everyone on the earth, all together—indeed Allah is all-sufficient, all-laudable.’
14:9Has there not come to you the account of those who were before you—the people of Noah, ‘Ad and Thamud, and those who were after them, whom no one knows [well] except Allah? Their apostles brought them manifest proofs, but they did not respond to them, and said, ‘We disbelieve in what you have been sent with. Indeed we have grave doubts concerning that to which you invite us.’2
14:10Their apostles said, ‘Is there any doubt about Allah, the originator of the heavens and the earth?! He calls you to forgive you a part of your sins, and grants you respite until a specified time.’ They said, ‘You are nothing but humans like us who desire to bar us from what our fathers used to worship. So bring us a manifest authority.’34

Commentary on this passage
Verse 7
1.Allah granted numerous bounties to the children of Israel and saved them from Firon and asked them to thank for His bounties, with a promise that they will be blessed with all the bounties in the world but people did not thank Allah. Then Allah reminded them of His Oneness and reminded them the result of the previous communities hut children of Israel refused and said foolishly that you want to prevent us from the old custom of our forefathers. These foolish people did not think that there was no harm in turning away from the old customs of ancestors. To deviate from the right path is wrong. If your forefathers worshipped idols, on which the dogs urinate you should turn away from this custom as it is the proof of your sensibility and their worshipping and obedience is only an excitement and madness but what is the concern of children of Israel with sensibility and justice.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
Benefit
The first stage of thankfulness is realization and understanding of the divine bounties. The second stage is to thank by one tongue and the last stage is the action of thankfulness. As mentioned in the traditions that thankfulness of bounty entails abstinence from the prohibited things, because using a divine bounty in illegal ways is an action of thanklessness.
- 1
According to some people if man is thankful for the bounties he would receive an increase in these bounties in this world itself. However, the style of “Severe Chastisement” indicates that the promise of both “Severe Chastisement” and “increase in bounties” are for the Hereafter.
- 2
Turning of the hands towards the face indicates severe anger, dislike and the greatest form of being aloof. That is “keep quiet.”
- 3
“Shakke Mureeb” is like “Ajeebul Ajeeb” an idiom, that denotes the highest kind of doubt.
- 4
Proof and argument is also called sultan, because through it one is able to defeat his opponents.
Benefit
Regarding the effect of actions, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says, “Sins, initially deprives one of the Tawfeeq of reciting Namaz-e-Shab and in this way continues to show its effect till its effect on the life is more profound than the effect of a knife on flesh and life is destroyed.”
