14. Ibrahim · Abraham

Makkan52 verses

14:44Warn the people of the day when the punishment will overtake them, whereat the wrongdoers will say, ‘Our Lord! Respite us for a short time so that we may respond to Your call and follow the apostles.’ [They will be told,] ‘Did you not use to swear earlier that there would be no reverse for you,

14:45while you dwelt in the dwellings of those who had wronged themselves [before], and it had been made clear to you how We had dealt with them [before you], and We had [also] cited examples for you?’

14:46They certainly devised their plots, but their plots are known to Allah, and their plots are not such as to dislodge the mountains.1

14:47So do not suppose that Allah will break His promise to His apostles. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, avenger.*

14:48The day when the earth is turned into another earth and the heavens [as well], and they are presented before Allah, the One, the All-paramount

14:49—on that day you will see the guilty bound together in chains,2

14:50their garments made of pitch, and the Fire covering their faces,

14:51so that Allah may reward every soul for what it has earned. Indeed Allah is swift at reckoning.

14:52This is a proclamation for mankind, so that they may be warned thereby and know that He is indeed the One God, and those who possess intellect may take admonition.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 44

1.People claim and deceive others, saying. “Be satisfied Hereafter is nothing and it is not necessary to be afraid of Qiyamat.” When he will come face to face, he would request to be sent back. Allah has already clarified about this, that this kind of request is not acceptable and he has to do whatever he wants to do in the world. This is an open challenge that if a man is sure, he would not come back to the world again but the condition of his behaviour is that, he is not ready for a moment to believe in Allah. Once if he gets a chance to return, he would behave worse than before and would think it would be possible to come back again. Allah, the Almighty disappoints him of this return and has referred to the past nations and invited them to do good deeds in the world, so they are attentive and derive lessons from it.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The Almighty Allah has all the information regarding the deceitful people. They cannot escape anywhere.

  2. Benefit

The style of addressing the Prophet (s.a.) in the 47th ayat denotes the importance of the matter. And who can be more certain than the Prophet (s.a.) that Allah is true to His word. Because the Prophet (s.a.) faces the whole infidel world having faith in the promise of the severe God, (i.e. who will severely punish the disbelievers).

  3. 2

    Safad - Imprisonment.

Sarabeel - Plural of Sarbaal, that is raiment.

Qitraan - A kind of oil which is applied in massage to an injured camel.

‘Taghsha wojooha-homumnaar’- That is the fire shall surround them from all sides and there will be no avenue of escape.

  4. Benefit

It should be clear that the transformation of the earth and the heavens does not indicate their annihilation. It indicates the changing of the present conditions, because the present conditions are not like the circumstances of Qiyamat. And the change for Qiyamat is inescapable. This is mentioned time and again in the description of Qiyamat. The beginning and the end of Surah Ibrahim is invitation towards Monotheism and it was thus in the beginning and the end of the life of Ibrahim (a.s.).
