Al-Falaq

The Dawn · verses 1–5

Makkan5 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ

113:1Say, ‘I seek the protection of the Lord of the daybreak1

مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

113:2from the evil of what He has created,

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ

113:3and from the evil of the dark night when it falls,23

وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ

113:4and from the evil of the witches, who blow on knots,4

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

113:5and from the evil of the envious one when he envies.’

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

1.We find certain dangers in human life : (i) Every creature has an aspect of evil and it is dangerous. (ii) Night is the root of danger as there can be different activities in it. (iii) Those who blow, and ignite fires are permanent dangers of society. (iv) Jealous people are a danger as no act of jealousy is respectable and each of its practice is a new type of crime. According to Quran the only way to be protected against all these dangers is through the protection of Allah and without that a person cannot remain safe from calamities.
