Makkan123 verses

11:89O my people, do not let your defiance toward me lead you to be visited by the like of what was visited on the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, and the people of Lot are not distant from you.

11:90Plead with your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. My Lord is indeed all-merciful, all-affectionate.’

11:91They said, ‘O Shu‘ayb, we do not understand much of what you say. Indeed we see that you are weak amongst us, and were it not for your tribe, we would have stoned you, and you are not a formidable [challenge] for us.’1

11:92He said, ‘O my people! Is my tribe more formidable in your sight than Allah, to whom you pay no regard? Indeed my Lord comprehends whatever you do.

11:93O my people! Act according to your ability; I too am acting. Soon you will know who will be overtaken by a punishment that will disgrace him, and who is a liar. So be on the watch; I too will be watching along with you.’2

11:94When Our edict came, We delivered Shu‘ayb and the faithful who were with him by a mercy from Us. And the Cry seized those who were wrongdoers, whereat they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes,

11:95as if they had never lived there. Behold, away with Midian!—just as Thamud was done away with!

11:96Certainly We sent Moses with Our signs and a manifest authority

11:97to Pharaoh and his elite, but they followed Pharaoh’s dictates, and Pharaoh’s dictates were not right-minded.

Commentary on this passage

1.The heart of Allah’s Prophet is full of sympathy that the corrupt people remain safe and continue to mock saying: we don’t understand what you are saying. If we were not in your community we would destroy you. This is the style of preaching of the prophet that after all community is the creature you think about the created things and do not think of Allah. You must have more respect of Him. We guess approximately that the end of a community nears, their logic changes and their behaviour with the reformers also changes. The point worthy of consideration is that though people very well knew about the family of Shu’ayb (a.s.) then why did they call him old and weak? How can one who has this kind of family be weak? Actually it is the logic of spurious people to provoke the community and his people, that we have left them in your honour otherwise we would have destroyed and ruined him. Though they knew that his people do not believe in him and are being deviated.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 91st ayat mentions the four attacks of the people against Shu’ayb (a,s,), They all are replied separately in ayats 92 and 93 that they lack understanding, they are disobedient, deserving punishment and not capable to flee from Allah.

  2. 1

Fiqh is understanding, Rajm is Stoning, Zahri, is that which is left behind.

  3. 2

This is a limitation and type of policy that you continue your work and I shall continue mine and after that we shall see who has achieved what. It also denotes saying that let us not fight amongst us. Just wait for the final results. Irteqaab is awaiting, Jathim is one who just sits without bulging from his place.

  4. Benefit

Shu’ayb (a.s.) begins his teachings with monotheism and then immediately mentions honesty in trading. This indicates that in addition to belief Islam accords importance to economics as well. And mere belief will not be of any use without good deeds. The reply of the people also clarified that they cherished economic freedom which can be the greatest cause of the downfall of the society. Rules and regulations are necessary whether in worship or in business.
