Verses 98–108

11. Hud · Hud

Makkan123 verses

11:98On the Day of Resurrection he will lead his people and conduct them into the Fire: an evil goal for the incoming!1

11:99They are pursued by a curse in this [world], as well as on the Day of Resurrection; evil is the award conferred [upon them]!

11:100These are from the accounts of the townships, which We recount to you. Of them, there are some that still stand, and some that have been mown down.2

11:101We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. When your Lord’s edict came, their gods whom they would invoke besides Allah were of no avail to them in any wise, and they did not increase them in anything but ruin.

11:102Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the townships that are wrongdoing. Indeed His seizing is painful and severe.

11:103There is indeed a sign in that for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a day on which all mankind will be gathered, and it is a day witnessed [by all creatures].

11:104And We do not defer it but for a determinate term.

11:105The day it comes, no one shall speak except by His leave. [On that day,] some of them will be wretched and [some] felicitous.

11:106As for the wretched, they shall be in the Fire: their lot therein will be groaning and wailing.3

11:107They shall remain in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure—except what your Lord may wish; indeed your Lord does whatever He desires.

11:108As for the felicitous, they will be in paradise. They will remain in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure—except what your Lord may wish—an endless bounty.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 101

1.This is a universal fact and the Quran has stated it about twenty times in different chapters and has invited man’s attention towards his weakness that there was no divine hand in his destruction. On the contrary it was the result of his own deeds.

Verse 102

2.There is no doubt that Allah keeps unjust people in his hold and gives respite as long as He wants. Otherwise the evil of the present age is not less than that of the past and yet the chastisement has not come. It is Allah’s discretion and no one has the right to interfere. Be it known that earthquakes and storms are natural calamities that occurs all the time and have no connection with divine chastisement but when they occur after prophet’s warning, they certainly are divine chastisement.

Verse 108

3.This is only an announcement of the supreme authority otherwise Allah’s justice demands that those who are abiding in hell can be released but those who are in the heaven cannot be expelled from it. This means that Allah has power on the heaven as well as hell and no one has the right to interfere.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

‘Wird’ is actually a spring of water but here it is used for hellfire like ‘Rafad’ denotes help and donation but here it is used to denote curse and chastisement so that for them fire is ‘wird’ and curse is ‘rufad’.

  2. 1

‘Qadam’ means to proceed ahead like Firon kept moving ahead and people followed behind. In the same way they will follow him in the hereafter and their final abode will be hell. And this is the appropriate reward of following him and what a terrible recompense it is!

  3. 2

According to archeologists the remnants of ancient civilizations are those of the Aad and Thamud. The relics of the nations of Nuh (a.s.) and Lut (a.s.) are completely destroyed. Allah knows best.

  4. 3

Zafeer is the initial sound of the donkey and shaheeq is the concluding sound. That is zafeer indicates the prolonging of the sound and shaheeq is returning it.

  5. Benefit

In ayats 106 and 108 shaqoo and Saad indicate that being evil and righteous is not inborn. It depends upon the deeds and it is under ones control. And the verb of shaqoo is ‘Maroof’ (with raf) thus indicating that man himself is responsible for it while the verb of saad is Majhool showing that this cannot be accomplished without the Tawfeeq of Allah.
