10. Yunus · Jonas
Makkan109 verses
10:42There are some of them who prick up their ears at you. But can you make the deaf hear even if they do not exercise their reason?
10:43There are some of them who observe you. But can you guide the blind even if they do not perceive?1
10:44Indeed Allah does not wrong people in the least; rather, it is people who wrong themselves.
10:45On the day He will gather them [it will be] as if they had not remained [in the world] except for an hour of the day getting acquainted with one another. They are certainly losers who deny the encounter with Allah, and they are not guided.2
10:46Whether We show you a part of what We promise them, or take you away [before that], [in any case] their return will be to Us and Allah will be witness to what they do.
10:47There is an apostle for every nation; so when their apostle comes, judgement is made between them with justice, and they are not wronged.
10:48They say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, should you be truthful?’
10:49Say, ‘I have no control over any benefit for myself nor [over] any harm except what Allah may wish. There is a time for every nation: when their time comes, they shall not defer it by a single hour nor shall they advance it.’*
10:50Say, ‘Tell me, should His punishment overtake you by night or day, [you will not be able to avert it]; so what part of it do the guilty seek to hasten?’
10:51‘What! Do you believe it when it has befallen? Now? While you would seek to hasten it [earlier]?!’
10:52Then it will be said to those who were wrongdoers, ‘Taste the everlasting punishment. Shall you not be requited for what you used to earn?’

Commentary on this passage
Verse 46
1.It is certain that divine chastisement will appear on hypocrites, infidels and atheists, whether in the presence of an Apostle or after his death. The period is fixed for each community though more respite is given. This is the misfortune of poly theists who make fun of respite and say when will your chastisement come? They have no sense what they would do if the chastisement descends in the day or night? What will they be able to remove it? No, not at all. It is better to bring faith in it. They will believe when they see the real chastisement. Allah will say, now what is the use getting faith in it? It is the same chastisement that you were inviting and making fun of its delay. There is a time fixed for your repentance and after that it is of no use. The true believers benefit from this warning.
Footnotes
Explanations of words and phrases in these verses
- 1
Those who listen attentively but still cannot understand in reality are referred to as blind and deaf by the Quran. It shows that apparent attentiveness is not the criterion. The criterion is actual ability to understand which is lacking in many educated Muslims. What can we say about the infidels and the polytheists?
- 2
The scene in Qiyamat shall be so terrifying that people will be recognising each other and also unmindful of each other as mentioned in another place. The first instance of this at the time of death. The dying person recognises everyone and is also oblivious of them. The condition of Qiyamat will be much more dreadful.
Benefit
It should be clear that in the 49th ayat the negation of control over harm and benefit along with the will of Allah proves that they are not themselves capable but they can get this capability by Allah’s permission. Thus to consider them absolutely incapable is wrong and it is the result of the lack of vision of some commentators.
Benefit
Some people have taken the phrase of ‘Le Kulle Ummatin Ajalin’ to indicate that Islam will also come to an end one day. Although this is very much impossible. Because the ayats refer to the tenure of nation and not religion, and punishment can befall even the Muslim nation because a contrary is not promised unconditionally.
