Makkan109 verses

10:34Say, ‘Is there anyone among your partners who originates the creation and then brings it back?’ Say, ‘Allah originates the creation, then He will bring it back.’ Then where do you stray?1

10:35Say, ‘Is there anyone among your partners who may guide to the truth?’ Say, ‘Allah guides to the truth. Is He who guides to the truth worthier to be followed, or he who is not guided unless shown the way? What is the matter with you? How do you judge?’2

10:36Most of them just follow conjecture; indeed conjecture is no substitute for the truth. Indeed Allah knows best what they do.*

10:37This Quran could not have been fabricated by anyone besides Allah; rather, it is a confirmation of what was [revealed] before it, and an elaboration of the Book, there is no doubt in it, from the Lord of all the worlds.

10:38Do they say, ‘He has fabricated it?’ Say, ‘Then bring a surah like it, and invoke whomever you can, besides Allah, should you be truthful.’

10:39Indeed, they deny something whose knowledge they do not comprehend, and whose explanation has not yet come to them. Those who were before them denied likewise. So observe how was the fate of the wrongdoers!

10:40Some of them believe in it, and some of them do not believe in it, and your Lord best knows the agents of corruption.

10:41If they deny you, say, ‘My deeds belong to me and your deeds belong to you: you are absolved of what I do and I am absolved of what you do.’

Commentary on this passage

Verse 35

1.The Holy Quran has solved all the problems of Islam with monotheism and its rule is if there is contest between the needy and the needless it is absurd to select the needy instead of the needless. In the stage of monotheism Allah is entirely needless and others (Gods) are all helpless and in guidance Allah’s Apostles and Imams have come to show the right path to people and they are needless of the people and others are dependent on them for their guidance. Therefore to disregard the needless and to follow the needy is ignorance and foolishness and nothing else.

Verse 36

2.Here supposition means a baseless belief even if it is to the limit of certainty. As are the beliefs of polytheists and infidels and they are based on conjecture; so they are referred to as baseless. The ayat has clarified that conjecture regarding the truth is of no use and that is why Islam has made Qiyas (conjecture) unlawful. Since its foundation is on guess. It can be used for worldly affairs since in them the truth is not decided from before. Whatever is decided is considered the truth.

Verse 39

3.It is guidance and that without thinking and understanding it can neither be verified nor falsified because to do this is a senseless act.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Absence of refutation by the polytheists shows that they are in fact inwardly convinced of the creation of Allah and they also confess to the final accounting that shall be effected by Him.

  2. 2

Yahaddi: It is actually ‘Tahaddi’. That is those who do not guide and that they shall also not be guided. It should be clear that idols even after being guided are not the guided ones. And neither can we find any capability in them. This is mentioned just as a possibility that if they intend to guide they must first themselves be guided. They are helpless and not capable of being guided. So how can they be able to guide? After this the list of deities is not restricted to the idols and it includes living creatures, who are in any case in need of guidance.

  3. Benefit

The 36th ayat mentions the baseless beliefs, of the infidels otherwise its reality is not related to whether this nation is reliable or not. After an absolute proof is established a doubt can be relied upon and this is the practice in all the worldly matters. People are acting upon all the apparent sayings and this cannot be denied.

  4. Benefit

Please note that Tawil means ‘to make it return’. Thus it denotes the expression of intended meaning. Or to explain the true meaning, or the interpretation of dreams. Tawil is also to give something an intellectual form. Tawil is in no way related to the hidden meaning of the words, and neither does it have any connection with the world of words.
