Makkan109 verses

10:26Those who are virtuous shall receive the best reward and an enhancement. Neither dust nor abasement shall overcast their faces. They shall be the inhabitants of paradise, and they shall remain in it [forever].1

10:27For those who have committed misdeeds, the requital of a misdeed shall be its like, and they shall be overcast by abasement. They shall have no one to protect [them] from Allah. [They will be] as if their faces were covered with dark patches of the night. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].

10:28On the day when We gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribe partners [to Allah], ‘Stay where you are—you and your partners!’ Then We shall set them apart from one another, and their partners will say, ‘It was not us that you worshipped.

10:29Allah suffices as a witness between you and us. We were indeed unaware of your worship.’2

10:30There every soul will examine what it has sent in advance, and they will be returned to Allah, their real master, and what they used to fabricate will forsake them.

10:31Say, ‘Who provides for you out of the sky and the earth? Who controls [your] hearing and sight, and who brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and who directs the command?’ They will say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘Will you not then be wary [of Him]?’3

10:32That, then, is Allah, your true Lord. So what is there after the truth except error? Then where are you being led away?

10:33Thus the word of your Lord became due against those who transgress, that they shall not have faith.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 26

1.Divine justice is that virtuous people would be rewarded more and the doers of evil be punished equally for their deeds. The virtuous people see the good result and their faces glow with joy while the wicked see their results and feel ashamed and their faces become dark.

Another result would be after the descent of chastisement right in front of them. People whom they trusted would run away and announce their helplessness because the stage of Allah’s chastisement is a very severe stage and no one helps anyone. Whether you consider anyone your God or your guide.

Verse 31

2.Human subsistence is obtained from the land or sky. The greatest human strength is hearing and vision. The creation of human being is from a lifeless matter. And this matter will again disintegrate. All these things are in the control of Allah alone. Even polytheists accept this, then why do they attribute partners to Him?

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Raheq means to cover. It denotes a black smoke. Ziyadab: There is a difference of opinion regarding this. However one thing is generally acceptable by all. And it is that the punishment commensurates with the evil, and the reward of good deed is more than its value.

  2. 2

‘In’ is the diluted form of ‘Inna’ whose proof is the Laam of ‘leghafeleen’ which cannot be used with the ‘In’ of negation.

  3. 3

Those who are considered partners of Allah by the polytheists have neither any power over the heavens and the earth, nor are they able to see and hear. They have no say over life and death either. Then what types of gods are they? And what sort of intellect has attributed divinity to them?

  4. Benefit

Please note that generally Quran has mentioned the singular form of the word ‘samee’ while the word ‘basar’ is mentioned in the plural form. It is necessary to highlight this literary beauty at this point.
