Verses 15–20

10. Yunus · Jonas

Makkan109 verses

10:15When Our manifest signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to encounter Us say, ‘Bring a Quran other than this, or alter it.’ Say, ‘I may not alter it of my own accord. I follow only what is revealed to me. Indeed should I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of a tremendous day.’

10:16Say, ‘Had Allah [so] wished, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I have dwelled among you for a lifetime before it. Do you not exercise your reason?’

10:17So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies His signs? Indeed the guilty will not be felicitous.1

10:18They worship besides Allah that which neither causes them any harm, nor brings them any benefit, and they say, ‘These are our intercessors with Allah.’ Say, ‘Will you inform Allah about something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?’ Immaculate is He and exalted above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him]!2

10:19Mankind were but a single [religious] community; then they differed. And were it not for a prior decree of your Lord, decision would have been made between them concerning that about which they differ.3

10:20They say, ‘Why has not some sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, ‘[The knowledge of] the Unseen belongs only to Allah. So wait. I too am waiting along with you.’

Commentary on this passage

There is no limit to ignorance and mischief of infidels. They always demand something new. One of their demands is that there are so many subjects in the Holy Quran against our will. They say change the whole Holy Quran or at least change the meaning of these verses. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) informed that this act of distortion of divine verses was a great sin and told them: J obey the revelation of Allah and the greatest proof of it is that the Holy Quran did not descend for forty years and I did not give any message but remained silent. This shows that I have not said anything of my own and I had been waiting for Allah’s command. The Holy Quran has warned the learned people in this blessed verse, that those who have faith in the judgement of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) should know that even the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) cannot give a decision on his own and it has warned those who are desirous to change the divine law.

Verse 18

1.Though they have selected one who they think can intercede with Allah and Allah has no knowledge of it because there is no possibility of intercession without Allah’s permission.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Here the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) replied to only one of the two demands I of the infidels, that when interpolation is not possible how can another book be revealed. Also referring to the past life he made clear that the natural tendencies of man I become apparent anyway till he is forty years old. When it has not been so it means that this natural capability has not been effective. Rather it is the gift of divine revelation.

  2. 1

The real fact is that success depends upon good deeds and moral character and for the sinner there is neither success in this way nor the Hereafter. It is just. misunderstanding that sinners have a success life in this world. Amirul Momineen (a.s.) has rightly said that one for whom there is deficiency in justice there will be deficiency for him in the injustice also. Because justice has a criterion while for injustice no such criterion exists.

  3. 2

Here harm is given preference over gain that deities other than Allah can only cause harm. They cannot benefit you and by coincidence this harm is not under their control.

  4. 3

Kalema is law because the reward and punishment shall not be decided in this world. There is a day fixed for this.

  5. *

This is a divine judgement regarding human freedom and it is the best solution of pre-destination and free will. That providence itself has decided to keep man free and there is no sort of change in this principle.
