Makkan109 verses

10:7Indeed those who do not expect to encounter Us and who are pleased with the life of this world and satisfied with it, and those who are oblivious of Our signs1

10:8—it is they whose refuge shall be the Fire because of what they used to earn.

10:9Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds, their Lord guides them by the means of their faith. Streams will run for them in gardens of bliss.

10:10Their call therein will be, ‘O Allah! Immaculate are You!’ and their greeting therein will be, ‘Peace!’ and their concluding call, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.’2

10:11Were Allah to hasten ill for mankind with their haste for good, their term would have been over. But We leave those who do not expect to encounter Us bewildered in their rebellion.3

10:12When distress befalls man, he supplicates Us, [lying] on his side, sitting, or standing; but when We remove his distress, he passes on as if he had never supplicated Us concerning the distress that had befallen him. What they have been doing is thus presented as decorous to the transgressors.

10:13Certainly We destroyed generations before you when they perpetrated wrongs: their apostles brought them manifest proofs, but they would not have faith. Thus do We requite the guilty lot.

10:14Then We made you successors on the earth after them that We may observe how you will act.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 12

1.Man has a strange temperament. When he is helpless, he prays for severe chastisement and is ready to die just as infidels prayed to Allah to rain stones and when the chastisement begins, he prays for its removal and when the wrath is removed, he turns away from Allah as if he does not even know Him and is not concerned with Him. We can understand the ungratefulness of people that a person thinks that the next time he would not have to deal with Him as it happens generally in life. But man cannot be independent of Allah. This is a kind of carelessness from him. According to his worldly desires he is wicked, dishonoured and a vile fellow otherwise there is no scope to be careless about the divine favours.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

There are different types of descriptions of the Human beings in the Holy Quran. He is called the weak, unjust, infidel, Fatoor, Ajool, Jahool etc. He is also called Ahsanut Taqweem, Allamahul Bayan, Allamal Insana Malam Ya’lam etc. All these show that even those created in the best form could fall into worst qualities if they deny Allah’s guidance.

  2. 1

Mostly the infidels are much attached to the world and unmindful of the Hereafter, but sometimes this defect is also seen in the believers. Then their consequences also resemble that of the infidels.

  3. 2

Paradise is a place of peace, comfort and serenity. Thus the dwellers of Paradise are neither unmindful of Allah’s remembrance and neither do they speak to the people except with peace. That is why their speech is praise and glorification of Allah and their gift is Salam and prayer for safety.

  4. 3

Just as a man prepares to commit suicide due to difficulties the unbeliever begins to pray for chastisement to himself. But Allah postpones this punishment otherwise by now nothing would have been left.

  5. *

‘Qarn’ means a period and it could also refer to a particular people that exist in a period. Here this second meaning is applicable.
