Makkan19 verses
96:1Read in the Name of your Lord who created;
96:3Read, and your Lord is the most generous,
96:4who taught by the pen,
96:5taught man what he did not know.
96:7when he considers himself without need.
96:8Indeed to your Lord is the return.
96:9Tell me, he who forbids
96:10a servant when he prays,
96:11tell me, should he be on [true] guidance,
96:12or bid [others] to Godwariness,
96:14—does he not know that Allah sees [him]?
96:15No indeed! If he does not cease, We shall seize him by the forelock,89
96:16a lying, sinful forelock!

Commentary on this passage
Verse 1
2.According to most commentators this revelation is first, with which the revelation of Quran started and this shows that the first message of Islam is to read and write and Allah has given this ability to man.
Verse 7
3.Certain people think that this is with reference to rich people, whereas in the words there is no such indication. And the beginning of discourse is concerned with knowledge which means that when man becomes self-sufficient from any aspect; knowledge or wealth he starts to rebel, which in all periods of time was a speciality of rich people and thinkers too.
Verse 15
4.In the eyes of nature the worst thing is to prevent worship of Allah and anyone who prevents worship of Allah should be aware of the consequences and believers should never obey such faithless people. But they should achieve the nearness of their Lord through prostration.
