At-Tin
The Fig · verses 1–8
Makkan8 verses
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيْتُونِ
وَطُورِ سِينِينَ
وَهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ٱلْأَمِينِ
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِىٓ أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍۢ
95:4We certainly created man in the best of forms;
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَٰهُ أَسْفَلَ سَٰفِلِينَ
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۢ
95:6except those who have faith and do righteous deeds. There will be an everlasting reward for them.
فَمَا يُكَذِّبُكَ بَعْدُ بِٱلدِّينِ
95:7So what makes you deny the Retribution?
أَلَيْسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَحْكَمِ ٱلْحَٰكِمِينَ
95:8Is not Allah the fairest of all judges?
Tafsir
Commentary on this passage
Verse 4
1.Nature has created man with the best of abilities and distinctions and its obvious proof is the creation of fig and olive side by side. In places it is the creation of Mt. Sina and the city of Mecca. Now it is man’s responsibility to take the benefit of those ablilities and work accordingly. Otherwise his destination will be lowest. And no one will be safe except those who believe and are of good character. By Asfala Safelin certain commentators have derived that it is old age but distinction is the sign that by destination the hereafter is meant here. Otherwise old age is for both believer and infidel. There is no scope for distinction but that old age should also be interpreted and with that too something else be assumed.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

Teen wa Zaitoon - (Fig and Olive) are two fruits and in view of some it denotes the area where these fruits grow, that is the area of Quds which was the centre of Ibrahim (a.s.) and the birthplace of Isa (a.s.) and his native place.

Toore Sineen (Mt. Sina) - The mountains where Moosa (a.s.) held conversation with Allah.

Balade Ameen (Safe city). Mecca. Sineen and Sina or Saina is the area where Mt. Toor is situated.

Asfala Saafeleen - It denotes a level of Hell. It is pointing towards those who have acted against the ‘Ahsane Taqween’ (in the best of creation). If it denotes old age, it is applicable to general public.
