Madinan129 verses

9:21Their Lord gives them the good news of His mercy and [His] pleasure, and for them there will be gardens with lasting bliss,1

9:22to remain in them forever. With Allah indeed is a great reward.

9:23O you who have faith! Do not befriend your fathers and brothers if they prefer faithlessness to faith. Those of you who befriend them—it is they who are the wrongdoers.2

9:24Say, ‘If your fathers and your sons, your brethren, your spouses, and your kinsfolk, the possessions that you have acquired, the business you fear may suffer, and the dwellings you are fond of, are dearer to you than Allah and His Apostle and to waging jihad in His way, then wait until Allah issues His edict, and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.*

9:25Allah has certainly helped you in many situations, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number impressed you, but it did not avail you in any way, and the earth became narrow for you in spite of its expanse, whereupon you turned your backs [to flee].3

9:26Then Allah sent down His composure upon His Apostle and upon the faithful, and He sent down hosts you did not see, and He punished the faithless, and that is the requital of the faithless.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 25

1.After the victory or Mecca, Bani Hawazin and Saquif collected a huge army to fight with Muslims. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s) was informed about it. He collected 10,000 Ansar and Muhajir. And with 2000 Neo-Muslims like Abu Sufyan and Muawiyah they proceeded. The infidels took hold of Darrah and as soon Muslims reached they started shooting arrows on them and Muslims started fleeing. Only ten Muslims were left behind. Ali. Abbas, Fazal bin Abbas, Mughaira bin Haris, Zaid bin Usama, Aiman bin Umme Aiman etc. Abbas called out to Muslims: O people of Shajar! O people of Surah Baqarah! Come back! The Muslims returned and a terrible battle ensued and the infidels were defeated. Abu larval was the commander of the infidel army. Ali (a.s) killed him in the battle. Seeing this the infidel army started relinquishing position and Muslims obtained a large booty. About 6000 women and kids became their prisoners. They obtained 24000 camels and 40000 cows and goats. Allamah Sharqawi has written in his book Muhammad Rasulal Hariya that Abu Sufyan and others had not gone to fight they had gone to discourage Muslims so that they may tum away from the battlefield. Fakhruddin Razi has stated that Abu Bakr was proud of the huge numbers and said: We cannot be defeated.

Verse 26

2.This Army may denote Angels and also other invisible helps because no one can account of the divine army.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Three things are demanded from the believers. Faith, migration and Jihad. Similarly three things are promised to them, Mercy, divine pleasure and Paradise.

  2. 2

The love of parents and brothers is liked and desired in Islam. But if they prefer disbelief over belief loving them is haraam because religion is more important than relationships.

  3. Benefit

The 24th ayat bas clearly announced that those who prefer worldly benefits to Jihad must be prepared to face dire consequences. The Lord of the worlds will never forgive such people. They have belittled religion and insulted its truths.

  4. 3

Hunain is a valley between Mecca and Taif. The battle that was fought there is knows as Battle of Hunain. It is also referred to as the campaign of Awsaat and the campaign of Hawazin.

Mawatin Katheera denotes the Battle of Badr, Battle of Bani Nuzayr, Bani Qurayza and conquest of Mecca etc. We know that such was the grin situation in the Battle of Hunain that out of a force of 12000 only ten people remained on the battle field and this group included the caliphs of Islam as well. Thus the Holy Quran has also referred to it as a common flight.
