84:1When the sky is split open3

84:2and gives ear to its Lord as it should.4

84:3When the earth is spread out5

84:4and throws out what is in it, emptying itself,6

84:5and gives ear to its Lord as it should.

84:6O man! You are labouring toward your Lord laboriously, and you will encounter Him.7

84:7Then, as for him who is given his record [of deeds] in his right hand,

84:8he will receive an easy reckoning,

84:9and he will return to his folks joyfully.

84:10But as for him who is given his record from behind his back,

84:11he will pray for annihilation8

84:12and enter the Blaze.

84:13Indeed he used to be joyful among his folk,

84:14and he thought that he would never return.9

84:15Yes, his Lord had been watching him.

84:16I swear by the evening glow,10

84:17by the night and what it is fraught with,11

84:18by the moon when it blooms full:12

84:19you will surely fare from stage to stage.13

84:20What is the matter with them that they will not believe,

84:21and will not prostrate when the Quran is recited to them?

Commentary on this passage

Verse 6

1.Belief in the next world draws the attention of man towards the point that man may make anyone as his aim and object in the world and he may raise his head towards whichever way he wishes and walk away, but in fact he is only going towards Allah. And he is going nearer to the destination where he will confront Him only. The last stage of life is death and it is the first stage of meeting Allah. And when man knows that after all he has to meet the Lord why he does not perfonn such deeds which will be proper and favourable to that meeting and with whom success can be achieved.

Verse 16

2.Evening is the indication to words that early evening when it is shifted from trouble to comfort. And night is the name of that stage of life. When scattered parts of life get together. Hands draw close together, children come to the mother’s side, animals come back to their abodes. And all these point towards the facts that one day man has to proceed towards his last destination. And there everyone has to gather, then why man does not believe?
