Verses 11–33

ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿١١﴾

83:11who deny the Day of Retribution;

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ﴿١٢﴾

83:12and none denies it except every sinful transgressor.

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

83:13When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’

كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ﴿١٤﴾

83:14No, that is not the case! Rather, their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning.¹

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ﴿١٥﴾

83:15Indeed, they will be alienated from their Lord on that day.

ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ﴿١٦﴾

83:16Afterward they will enter hell,

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿١٧﴾

83:17then told, ‘This is what you used to deny!’

كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ﴿١٨﴾

83:18Indeed, the record of the pious is in Illeeyun.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ﴿١٩﴾

83:19And what will show you what is Illeeyun?

كِتَٰبٌۭ مَّرْقُومٌۭ﴿٢٠﴾

83:20It is a written record,

يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿٢١﴾

83:21witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].

إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ﴿٢٢﴾

83:22The pious shall be amid bliss,

عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

83:23observing, [as they recline] on couches.²

تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ﴿٢٤﴾

83:24You will perceive in their faces the freshness of bliss.

يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍۢ مَّخْتُومٍ﴿٢٥﴾

83:25They will be served with a sealed pure wine,³⁴

خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌۭ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ﴿٢٦﴾

83:26whose seal is musk—for such let the viers vie—⁵

وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ﴿٢٧﴾

83:27and whose seasoning is from Tasneem,⁶

عَيْنًۭا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿٢٨﴾

83:28a spring where those brought near [to Allah] drink.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ﴿٢٩﴾

83:29Indeed the guilty used to laugh at the faithful,

وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ﴿٣٠﴾

83:30and when they passed them by they would wink at each other,⁷

وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ﴿٣١﴾

83:31and when they returned to their folks they would return amused,⁸

وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ﴿٣٢﴾

83:32and when they saw them they would say, ‘Indeed those are the astray!’

وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَٰفِظِينَ﴿٣٣﴾

83:33Though they were not sent to watch over them.⁹
