82. Al-Infitaar · The Cleaving

Makkan19 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتْ

82:1When the sky is rent apart,12

وَإِذَا ٱلْكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتْ

82:2when the stars are scattered,13

وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ

82:3when the seas are merged,14

وَإِذَا ٱلْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ

82:4when the graves are overturned,15

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ

82:5then a soul shall know what it has sent ahead and left behind.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

    The fifth ayat is proof that the effects of our deeds are permanent and they are surely going to become apparent one day. Therefore it is the duty of everyone that we should leave good examples and we must not leave bad examples, because we would have to bear its consequences.

    Infitaar - It is derived from fitr, that is to split.

    Intithaar - To scatter.

    Fujjerat - The coming down of barriers and the coming together of everything.

    Bo’therat - The scattering of things.
