Verses 8–29

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ﴿٨﴾

81:8when the girl buried-alive will be asked¹

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍۢ قُتِلَتْ﴿٩﴾

81:9for what sin she was killed.

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ﴿١٠﴾

81:10When the records [of deeds] are unfolded,²

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ﴿١١﴾

81:11when the sky is stripped off,³

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ﴿١٢﴾

81:12when hell is set ablaze,⁴

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ﴿١٣﴾

81:13when paradise is brought near,

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ﴿١٤﴾

81:14then a soul shall know what it has readied [for itself].

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ﴿١٥﴾

81:15So I swear by the stars that return,⁵

ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ﴿١٦﴾

81:16the comets,⁶⁷

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ﴿١٧﴾

81:17by the night as it approaches,⁸

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ﴿١٨﴾

81:18by the dawn as it breathes:⁹

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ﴿١٩﴾

81:19it is indeed the speech of a noble apostle,

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍۢ﴿٢٠﴾

81:20powerful and eminent with the Lord of the Throne,¹⁰

مُّطَاعٍۢ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍۢ﴿٢١﴾

81:21one who is obeyed and is trustworthy as well.

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍۢ﴿٢٢﴾

81:22Your companion is not crazy:

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ﴿٢٣﴾

81:23certainly he saw him on the manifest horizon,

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍۢ﴿٢٤﴾

81:24and he is not miserly concerning the Unseen.¹¹

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٍۢ رَّجِيمٍۢ﴿٢٥﴾

81:25And it is not the speech of an outcast Satan.

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ﴿٢٦﴾

81:26So where are you going?

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ﴿٢٧﴾

81:27It is just a reminder for all the nations,

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ﴿٢٨﴾

81:28for those of you who wish to walk straight;

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ﴿٢٩﴾

81:29but you will not wish unless it is wished by Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
