Madinan75 verses

8:41Know that whatever thing you may come by, a fifth of it is for Allah and the Apostle, for the relatives and the orphans, for the needy and the traveller, if you have faith in Allah and what We sent down to Our servant on the Day of Separation, the day when the two hosts met; and Allah has power over all things.1

8:42When you were on the nearer side, and they on the farther side, while the caravan was below you, and had you agreed together on an encounter, you would have certainly failed to keep the tryst, but in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, so that he who perishes might perish by a manifest proof, and he who lives may live on by a manifest proof, and Allah is indeed all-hearing, all-knowing.23

8:43When Allah showed them to you as few in your dream, and had He shown them as many, you would have lost heart, and disputed about the matter. But Allah spared you. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts.

8:44And when He showed them to you as few in your eyes, when you met them [on the battlefield], and He made you [appear] few in their eyes, [it was] in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, and to Allah all matters are returned.

8:45O you who have faith! When you meet a host [in battle], then stand firm, and remember Allah greatly so that you may be felicitous.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 41

1.Allah has made Khums necessary by giving the reference of the victory of Battle of Badr so that Muslims would not be confused for the lack of goods just as the followers of Badr were not worried about the lack of strength of their people and Allah filled their scarcity. Khums is obligatory and one who does not believe, cannot accomplish it. Khums does not concern with technical prize or boon hut it is obligatory and beneficial and its detail is found in the traditions of Ahle bait (a.s), who are the successors of Quran and also included in Quran.

Verse 42

2.The Holy Quran has pointed out the victory of Muslims in the battle of Badr that initially Allah has made your condition much better than infidels. Then the caravan moved towards the low lying plain and that the greed of booty should not be an impediment in the way of war. Then Allah decreased the number of enemies.

Verse 45

3.This is the sign, there are two secrets of success in Islam (1) firmness (2) sincerity. Remembrance of god does not mean verbal repetition but remembrance should be such that make us confident and make us ready to be bound to Allah’s commands.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The share of Sadat in Khums is not due to their superiority, It is prescribed because they are forbidden Zakat. It’s secret was also that since Zakat was for public welfare the Prophet (s.a.) kept his family away from it so that there is so possibility of any type of false allegations.

  2. 1

The actual meaning of ‘Ghanimat’ is every type of profit. Terminologically it refers to the booty collected in battles, that it is the common profit of the Muslims. It is also unintended gain because Jihad is waged for defending religion and not for gathering war booty.

  3. 2

Udwa means the fringe of the field.

  4. 3

Apparently the Battle of Badr occurred by chance because there was no sort of pledge to fight the enemies. The Muslims had come only to intercept the trade caravan of the Meccans. Then it developed into a battle and Muslims agreed to wage Jihad. Otherwise if it had been preplanned they might not even have left Medina due to internal differences.

  5. Benefit

Half of the Khums, which is prescribed as the share of the Sadat is not due to their relationship. It is because of their eligibility for it and that is why it is only for the poor and needy and that too cannot exceed their total yearly expenses
