7. Al-A'raaf · The Heights

Makkan206 verses

7:96If the people of the towns had been faithful and Godwary, We would have opened to them blessings from the heaven and the earth. But they denied; so We seized them because of what they used to earn.1

7:97Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment overtaking them at night while they are asleep?

7:98Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment overtaking them at midday while they are playing around?2

7:99Do they feel secure from Allah’s devising? No one feels secure from Allah’s devising except the people who are losers.

7:100Does it not dawn upon those who inherited the earth after its [former] inhabitants that if We wish We will punish them for their sins, and set a seal on their hearts so they would not hear?

7:101These are the towns some of whose accounts We recount to you. Their apostles certainly brought them manifest proofs, but they were not the ones to believe in what they had denied earlier. Thus does Allah put a seal on the hearts of the faithless.3

7:102We did not find in most of them any [loyalty to] covenants. Indeed, We found most of them to be transgressors.

7:103Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his elite, but they wronged them. So observe how was the fate of the agents of corruption!

7:104And Moses said, ‘O Pharaoh, I am indeed an apostle from the Lord of all the worlds.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 96

1.An auspicious verse of the Holy Quran disclosed the truth that effects of faith and fear of God are not only in hereafter, rather its effects are also seen in the world. These are not the results of material and missiles. Materials and missiles are working in east and west, north and south and natural missiles have effect on the earth and the sky. Allah shows His Kindness and sends His blessings from the sky and the earth and does not make His people dependant on others, otherwise can any worldly power challenge them? Allah is their helper. He is the Master of both the earth and the sky. But it does not mean that the faithful give up their faith and fear of God because fear of God means to do good acts. Only the difference is that polytheists trust on their own deeds and people of Allah rely on Allah’s invisible help and they know that only Allah makes the good deeds and hard work fructuous and gives abundance blessings for their good deeds.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Heavenly bounties denote rain etc. earthly bounties stand for vegetation plants and trees etc. ‘Bass’ means punishment. ‘Bayaat’ is night time. ‘Zuha’ is the time of dawn.

  2. 2

The mention of sleep and playfulness in connection with divine chastisement indicates a state of unmindfulness when people are not aware and the punishment descends all of a sudden, while neither the wakened people can stop divine punishment nor the those who are mindful. Those who consider themselves safe from it are the actual losers.

  3. 3

Putting a seal denotes, absence of Tawfeeq. When a person becomes obstinate in his deviation the Almighty also removes His Tawfeeq from him and deprives them from guidance. Otherwise, in all cases He demands His servants that they come on the right path and not subject themselves to destruction.

  4. Benefit

The pledge mentioned in the 102nd ayat could also be the pledge of initial creation that Allah had taken from every creature on the first day of their creation. It could also be practical oath that the prophets used to extract from their people that they shall remain firm on religion. And its fulfillment was real religiousness and belief.
