Makkan206 verses

7:23They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves! If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’

7:24He said, ‘Get down, being enemies of one another! On the earth shall be your abode and sustenance for a time.’1

7:25He said, ‘In it you will live, and in it you will die; and from it you will be raised [from the dead].’

7:26‘O Children of Adam! We have certainly sent down to you garments to cover your nakedness, and for adornment. Yet the garment of Godwariness—that is the best.’ That is [one] of Allah’s signs, so that they may take admonition.2

7:27‘O Children of Adam! Do not let Satan tempt you, like he expelled your parents from paradise, stripping them of their garments to expose to them their nakedness. Indeed he sees you—he and his hosts—whence you do not see them. We have indeed made the devils friends of those who have no faith.’

7:28When they commit an indecency, they say, ‘We found our fathers practising it, and Allah has enjoined it upon us.’ Say, ‘Indeed Allah does not enjoin indecencies. Do you attribute to Allah what you do not know?’

7:29Say, ‘My Lord has enjoined justice,’ and [He has enjoined,] ‘Set your heart [on Him] at every occasion of prayer, and invoke Him, putting your exclusive faith in Him. Even as He brought you forth in the beginning, so will you return.’3

7:30A part [of mankind] He has guided and a part has deserved [to be consigned to] error, for they took devils for guardians instead of Allah, and supposed they were guided.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 26

1.The story of Adam and Hawwa (a.s.) is narrated in different places in detail in the Holy Quran. Its aim is not to make people aware of historical facts or to tell them a story. On the contrary its aim is only that children of Adam should take lessons from these incidents. Just as it has been pointed out in the verses of the Holy Quran and repeatedly mentioned Shaitan to be an enemy of children of Adam. Though his enmity was actually with Adam (a.s.) but he has taken a vow to take revenge. Therefore it is necessary to safe guard one’s faith from him.

Verse 27

2.Some sermonizers have stated very beautifully that it is easy to stay in heaven but difficult to enter it from outside. But when Shaitan apparently succeeded in his deceit that he brought out who were in the heaven; why the children of Adam are not mindful? Also there was no possibility of sin in the heaven and Adam (a.s.) was a sinless person and here in the world is possibility of sin and the children of Adam are also not sinless.

Verse 30

3.Quran considers as misled those who do not pray in the mosques and the reason of the friendship of Shaitans is the secret of being misled. Therefore it is the duty of faithful to pray in mosques as sincere people and should not include show off in this. As Allah would summon all the people to His court on the day of resurrection and take account of their deeds.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Adam, Hawwa and Shaitan - all three are addressed here. The duty of the progeny of Adam (a.s.) is to consider Shaitan their enemy is one who is not visible. Shaitan could see the people but the people cannot see him.

  2. 2

Sawa - It is anything that does not deserve to be mentioned openly. Here it denotes the sexual organs. Allah has appointed three types of garments. A garment to cover the private parts. A garment that beautifies the wearer and the garment of piety. The last one is the best and most useful in the world and the Hereafter.

  3. 3

Aqama wajh means worship. ‘Kul Masjid’ denotes anyone Mosque otherwise it is not possible for one to pray in all the Mosques. What is obvious is that worship should be only in a Mosque, wherever it might be.
