Verses 171–178

7. Al-A'raaf · The Heights

Makkan206 verses

7:171When We plucked the mountain [and held it] above them as if it were a canopy (and they thought it was about to fall on them): ‘Hold on with power to what We have given you and remember that which is in it, so that you may be Godwary.’

7:172When your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants and made them bear witness over themselves, [He said to them,] ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes indeed! We bear witness.’ [This,] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘Indeed we were unaware of this,’1

7:173or lest you should say, ‘Our fathers ascribed partners [to Allah] before [us] and we were descendants after them. Will You then destroy us because of what the falsifiers have done?’

7:174Thus do We elaborate the signs, so that they may come back.

7:175Relate to them an account of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he cast them off. Thereupon Satan pursued him, and he became one of the perverse.2

7:176Had We wished, We would have surely raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his [base] desires. So his parable is that of a dog: if you make for it, it lolls out its tongue, and if you let it alone, it lolls out its tongue. Such is the parable of the people who deny Our signs. So recount these narratives, so that they may reflect.

7:177Evil is the parable of the people who deny Our signs and wrong themselves.

7:178Whomever Allah guides is rightly guided, and whomever He leads astray—it is they who are the losers.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 172

1.An intellectual problem before the Islamic scholars is that whether on the first day of creation Allah really took out all the offspring from Adam’s (a.s.) loins and asked them, or it is only a metaphor that Allah has created the children of Adam (a.s.) on this tendency. That if they are asked, who is your God? They will not take the name of anyone except Allah. Some traditions are found about Aalam-e-zar (the spiritual sphere) and some scholars have also refuted it. But this is not one of the principles of faith that the scholars who deny it be termed as apostates. Though there is no harm in this acceptance also.

Verse 175

2.It is said his name was Balam bin Ba’oor and he had knowledge of divine signs and his status was very high but Firon bribed him and he became ready to curse Moosa (a.s.). It is another thing that when he wanted to move his ass did not go ahead with him and told him: I cannot make a move against the Prophet of Allah. That is why this proverb was coined that ‘the ass of Balaam was wiser than him.’

Verse 176

3.The condition of every greedy person in the world is that whether you let him come near or cast him out, his tongue will be false and he will always express his thirst and desires.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

Regarding the shaking of the mountain there are various opinions of the commentators. According to some regard it as a miracle and some think that the mountain tilted and the people felt it was on their heads. Others have interpreted it to mean that a piece separated from the mountain and passed over their heads.

  2. 1

‘Bala’ is the letter of reply that is used to deny negation. Meaning that it is impossible that Allah is not the Lord of the worlds. On the other hand if instead of ‘Bala’ the word ‘Na’am’ had been used it would have been the acceptance of the above negation, and that would have been Kufr (disbelief).

  3. 2

The Shaitan began to follow him and made him, his own follower. This is a special method of leading people astray. The Shaitan does not make people of status and stature follow him because they will feel downgraded. He makes them his guide so that their ego and pride will remain intact and he would get a chance to mislead them.

  4. Benefit

Regarding Aalam-e-Zar some peeple are of the opinion that the progeny of Adam was separated from his back or his clay and given understanding. Then they were interrogated and this way the argument was completed. However, this is not a reliable explanation that the ayat mentions the progeny of Adam and does not include Adam himself.
