Verses 1–12

ٱلْحَآقَّةُ﴿١﴾

69:1The Besieger!

مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ﴿٢﴾

69:2What is the Besieger?!

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ﴿٣﴾

69:3What will show you what is the Besieger?!

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ﴿٤﴾

69:4Thamudand ‘Ad denied the Cataclysm.³

فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ﴿٥﴾

69:5As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the Cry.⁴

وَأَمَّا عَادٌۭ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِرِيحٍۢ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍۢ﴿٦﴾

69:6And as for ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a fierce icy gale,

سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍۢ وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًۭا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍۢ﴿٧﴾

69:7which He clamped on them for seven gruelling nights and eight days, so that you could see the people there lying about prostrate as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.⁵⁶⁷

فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةٍۢ﴿٨﴾

69:8So do you see any remaining trace of them?

وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَٰتُ بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ﴿٩﴾

69:9Then Pharaoh and those who were before him, and the towns that were overturned, brought about iniquity.⁸⁹

فَعَصَوْا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةًۭ رَّابِيَةً﴿١٠﴾

69:10They disobeyed the apostle of their Lord, so He seized them with a terrible seizing.¹⁰

إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ﴿١١﴾

69:11Indeed when the Flood rose high, We carried you in a floating ark,¹¹

لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٌۭ وَٰعِيَةٌۭ﴿١٢﴾

69:12that We might make it a reminder for you, and that receptive ears might remember it.¹²
