Their light will move swiftly before them and on their right. They will say, ‘Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us! Indeed You have power over all things.’1

Commentary on this passage

Verse 10

1.Right and duty is mutually necessary, it is an openly declared law of Islam. Its meaning is that Islam does not allow any right to anyone till that person is entrusted with some or the other duty on his self. And it does not devolve any responsibility on anyone till it gives some right to that person in comparison. It has the same system with regard to the wives of Prophet (s.a.), that they are given high rank compared to the general followers. For the followers they are mothers. Marriage with them is deemed unlawful in any condition. In comparison to that. they are given great responsibilities also. And only fulfilling these responsibilities is the secret of achieving greatness. Otherwise only being the wife of the Prophet (s.a.) has no status. That is why both examples are given. Also where faithful ladies are with the worst type of husbands they are not at any loss. Also there arc some unprincipled ladies with the best of husbands, rather Prophets and still they don’t get any benefit. This is because the religion of Allah is not the religion of relationship and wifehood. Faith and character are the criteria. But incidentally, the instance of one such lady was also presented who was not in the wifehood of any husband and she had received all the honour only on the basis of her character and chastity. So that, this also becomes evident that wifehood and relation has no connection with the hereafter and the final consequence. For that only belief, fear of Allah, acceptance of the words of Allah, obedience and worship is required and its ranks are determined on all these fundamentals.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Imam Sajjad (a.s.) says: Taubah is a door that the Almighty Allah has opened for His Servants. Those who do not enter it have no excuse to justify their action.

  2. 1

Taubah of Nasooh - That Taubah after which one does not even think of committing the same sin. Yokaffir ankum saiyyatekum. That is Allah will veil your sins; and ignore them.

  3. 2

This Zarab is in the meaning of Ja’l (appointed). That is Allah has made them examples. The Khayanat of wife of Lut and wife of Nuh (a.s.) does not imply unchastity. It is one of the certain things that the wife of a prophet cannot do anything that is related to the marital life of the prophet. Other than this she can commit any other thing and there is even possibility of disbelief.

  4. *

According to traditions the Khayanat of the wife of Nuh (a.s.) was that she used to support the disbelievers and the enemies of her husband. And the wife of Lut (a.s.) used to invite the people towards the guests who arrived at their house so that people may demand them to commit sodomy and they stop coming to the prophet. (May Allah protect everyone from such wives who create such hurdles in ones aim. That they neither care for the religion of Allah nor the respect and honour of their husbands).

  5. Benefit

It is mentioned in Ruhul Ma’ani that the name of Nuh’s wife was Rabia and that of Lut’s wife was Waleha or Bilaks.
