64. At-Taghaabun · Mutual Disillusion
Madinan18 verses
يَوْمَ يَجْمَعُكُمْ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْجَمْعِ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلتَّغَابُنِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ وَيَعْمَلْ صَٰلِحًۭا يُكَفِّرْ عَنْهُ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِۦ وَيُدْخِلْهُ جَنَّٰتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًۭا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
64:9When He will you bring you together for the Day of Gathering, it will be a day of privation [and regret]. As for those who have faith in Allah and act righteously, He shall absolve them of their misdeeds and admit them into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. That is the great success.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
64:10But as for those who are faithless and deny Our signs, they will be the inmates of the Fire, to remain in it [forever], and it is an evil destination.
مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُۥ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
64:11No affliction visits [anyone] except by Allah’s leave. Whoever has faith in Allah, He guides his heart, and Allah has knowledge of all things.1
وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَىٰ رَسُولِنَا ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
64:12Obey Allah and obey the Apostle; but if you turn away, then Our Apostle’s duty is only to communicate in clear terms.
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
64:13Allah—there is no god except Him—in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُمْ وَأَوْلَٰدِكُمْ عَدُوًّۭا لَّكُمْ فَٱحْذَرُوهُمْ ۚ وَإِن تَعْفُوا۟ وَتَصْفَحُوا۟ وَتَغْفِرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ
64:14O you who have faith! Indeed, you have enemies among your spouses and children; so beware of them. Yet if you excuse, forbear, and forgive, then Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful.
إِنَّمَآ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَأَوْلَٰدُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌۭ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌۭ
64:15Rather, your possessions, and children are a test, and Allah—with Him is a great reward!
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ وَأَنفِقُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا لِّأَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
64:16So be wary of Allah, as much as you can, and listen and obey, and spend [in the way of Allah]; that is better for yourselves. Those who are saved from their own greed—it is they who are the felicitous.2
إِن تُقْرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًۭا يُضَٰعِفْهُ لَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ شَكُورٌ حَلِيمٌ
64:17If you lend Allah a good loan, He shall multiply it for you and forgive you, and Allah is all-appreciative, all-forbearing,3
عَٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
64:18Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, the All-mighty, the All-wise.
Tafsir
Commentary on this passage
Verse 9
1.Tagabun is the word for victory and defeat and in this Surah by narrating both the characters, the same fact is pronounced that those people with good character are the winners in the game of life and evil people are in loss. Now it is the duty of man that he should make the field (span) of his life, as the field of victory, and not allow it to become the field of defeat. So that on the day of judgement he has to face shame, disgrace and regret and he will be deprived of reward which has been established for those who win this game. And for which, there are conditions of the best of belief and character.
Verse 14
2.It should be known that in this Holy verse there is mention of certain wives and children and they are interpreted as enemies. In the second ayat there is mention of total property and children and they are referred to as test. As if it is pointing towards the fact that all properties and children are causes of test and man should be remain alert about this. Some children become enemies when they have evil desires and put them on the road to destruction. So they should withdraw themselves from them and it is the same with the wives. Some commentators have related the following with regard to Fitnah and test. The Prophet (s.a.) was addressing the Muslims and Imam Hasan and Husain (a.s.) entered. Their feet got entangled in their shirts and the Prophet (s.a.) stopped the address, got down from pulpit and lifted them up. Then he went to the pulpit and recited this Verse. As if the Prophet (s.a.) wanted to say that this was supposed to be a test for him from Allah, that whether I prefer to complete my address or to lift the one who will be the saviour of Islam i.e. Husain Ibne Ali (a.s.). And by giving Husain (a.s.) preference I have succeeded in the test. Now It is a duty of every Muslim to recognize Husain (a.s.) and whenever time comes, he should help Husain (a.s.) and gain success.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

This difficulty implies natural calamities which do not occur without Allah’s permission and their purpose is to test the people. Those calamities which result from evil deeds of man are upon the man himself. They are not related to the Almighty.

Regarding the people it is the duty of man that if they become inimical and begin to deviate we must be careful of them. And if possible we should forgive them their misdeeds. Regarding Allah it is our responsibility that we listen to His message and prove that we have heard it correctly by acting upon it practically. And we must spend our wealth in the way of Allah. And we must inculcate His fear in ourselves. There is no possibility of success in life without these matters.

Avoiding greed causes salvation and the best way to avoid greed is to spend ones wealth in the way of Allah and to take double and four times so that there is no feeling of loss. And the love of wealth also exits from our heart.
Benefit
The following hadith of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) is mentioned in Ruhul Maani: At the time of the birth of every child the last verses of Surah Taghabun are inscribed on the cavities of its head. The destiny is fixed on this.
