Madinan11 verses

63:1When the hypocrites come to you they say, ‘We bear witness that you are indeed the apostle of Allah.’ Allah knows that you are indeed His Apostle, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are indeed liars.

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةًۭ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

63:2They make a shield of their oaths, and bar from the way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they used to do.56

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

63:3That is because they believed and then disbelieved, so their hearts were sealed. Hence, they do not understand.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 1

3.Ali (a.s.) has given the best definition of hypocrite: The tongue of the believer is behind his heart and the heart of hypocrite is behind his tongue. Believer says only that which he has in his heart and the hypocrite does not exactly have in his heart what he says.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 5

Aimaan - Plural of Yamin, that is, type.

  2. 6

Junnah - Shield. Please note that after Yaalam and Yashhad there should be Zabar on ‘An’ but there is ‘zer’ here because the ‘Laam’ has been entered on predicate so its action has been nullified.
