62. Al-Jumu'a · Friday

Madinan11 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلْمَلِكِ ٱلْقُدُّوسِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ

62:1Whatever there is in the heavens and in the earth glorifies Allah, the Sovereign, the All-holy, the All-mighty, the All-wise.3456

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى بَعَثَ فِى ٱلْأُمِّيِّۦنَ رَسُولًۭا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ لَفِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

62:2It is He who sent to the unlettered [people] an apostle from among themselves, to recite to them His signs, to purify them, and to teach them the Book and wisdom, and earlier they had indeed been in manifest error.7

وَءَاخَرِينَ مِنْهُمْ لَمَّا يَلْحَقُوا۟ بِهِمْ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

62:3And to others from among them [as well] who have not yet joined them. And He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.8

ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

62:4That is Allah’s grace, which He grants to whomever He wishes, and Allah is dispenser of a great grace.

مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ حُمِّلُوا۟ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَحْمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ ٱلْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًۢا ۚ بِئْسَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

62:5The example of those who were charged with the Torah, then failed to carry it, is that of an ass carrying books. Evil is the example of the people who deny Allah’s signs, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.910

قُلْ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوٓا۟ إِن زَعَمْتُمْ أَنَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ لِلَّهِ مِن دُونِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا۟ ٱلْمَوْتَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

62:6Say, ‘O Jews! If you claim that you are Allah’s favourites, to the exclusion of other people, then long for death, should you be truthful.’

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

1.In this blessed Surah Allah has first introduced Himself and then mentioned the annunciation of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) so that man gets the idea, Who has sent the Prophet (s.a.) and the One, having such attribute will commission what type of a Prophet and what will be His purpose. After that the purposes of prophet hood are mentioned. The details of which are as follows: (i) To recite and make them listen to the Verses of Allah and teachings of the Lord. (ii) To purify the souls from polytheism, infidelity, paganism, ignorance and all other sins, blemishes and vices. (iii) To create perfection (excellence) of knowledge by teaching the Book. (iv) To show the way how to live a life of civility by teaching prudence.

Verse 5

2.There is no doubt that Jews have distorted the text of Torah and Muslims have not tampered with the text of Quran. But even then Muslims who do not follow the teachings of Quran, cannot, as a matter of fact be called humans. This is because if people cannot bear the weight (teachings) of a book like Torah, they are considered as asses. The status of Quran is many times more than that. It has very high value and respect compared to the Torah. One who does nor bear the burden of this (Quran) cannot in any respect be called human.

Verse 6

3.The wish of death is not suicide, rather it is preparation to meet Allah and to run away from death is a sign of bad character. In the battlefield you get the best verdict between love of Allah and bad character and it becomes evident that whose claim to love Allah is true and whose claim is false. It should be known that Jews are the ones who run away from death and they don’t have the courage to face death. Therefore those who get frightened on seeing the Jews and run away, they even though, they have recited Kalimah, are worse than Jews. Otherwise what is the meaning of running away from those who themselves run away? And what is the sense in leaving ones territory because of their fear? Actually only people like Haider-e-Karrar Ali (a.s.) can confront these kinds of people.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

    Jumo - There is pesh on both Jeem and Meem in this word. And it is derived from ‘Jama’, that is the day of gathering.

    Malik - The ruler whose kingdom has no boundaries.

    Quddoos - The God, each of whose quality is purified and there is no scope of any defect in them.

    Aziz - The God who is dominant over everything.

    Hakeem - The God who uses His dominance in conformity with His wisdom and does nothing against reason.

    Ummiyeen - That is illiterate Arabs or the people of Mecca who lived in Ummul Qura.

    Aakhereena Minhum - All those believers who would continue to be born till the last age.

    Hamal-e-Taurat - It was demanded from them that they should act on it but they did not do so. Rather they found the book very strict so they changed it and made interpolations. Just as some Muslims instead of acting on the Quran have made changes and interpolations in its meanings and interpretations.
