Makkan165 verses

6:91They did not regard Allah with the regard due to Him when they said, ‘Allah has not sent down anything to any human.’ Say, ‘Who had sent down the Book that was brought by Moses as a light and guidance for the people, which you make into parchments that you display, while you conceal much of it, and [by means of which] you were taught what you did not know, [neither] you nor your fathers?’ Say, ‘Allah!’ Then leave them to play around in their impious gossip.1

6:92Blessed is this Book, which We have sent down, confirming what was [revealed] before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are watchful of their prayers.2

6:93Who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or says, ‘It has been revealed to me,’ while nothing was revealed to him, and he who says, ‘I will bring the like of what Allah has sent down?’ Were you to see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death, and the angels extend their hands [saying]: ‘Give up your souls! Today you shall be requited with a humiliating punishment because of what you used to attribute to Allah untruly, and for your being disdainful towards His signs.’

6:94‘Certainly you have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time, and left behind whatever We had bestowed on you. We do not see your intercessors with you—those whom you claimed to be [Our] partners in [deciding] you[r] [fate]. Certainly all links between you have been cut, and what you used to claim has forsaken you!’3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 91

1.Although there are different views about the Islamic creed that reciters were polytheists, Arabs or Jews. Anyhow they are Muslims that this cry is not of Muslims and its reciters may be infidel and from here we can guess that in the presence of the family members of Imam Husain (a.s.) when Yazeed was announcing but it was not the slogan of Islam but it was the slogan of infidelity or at the time of Uthman’s reign, Abu Sufyan advised, make caliphate bounce like a ball. There is no heaven or hell. It was the explanation of ignorance and had no concern with Islam. Caliph is the responsible person of Islam and he cannot tolerate impious advice.

Verse 94

2.This is the time of warning or taking a lesson. It is the condition of agony for a human being. Angel of death is ready, stretching his hands to take away the soul and says now give up your soul and demonstrate your pride and witness how you are departing towards Allah with empty hands. Worldly pleasures and comforts are of no use nor your Gods whom you worshipped and today, if your end would have been like the beginning you would be safe by questioning and answering but here, what a pity, that loneliness is the beginning and giving account is extremely severe.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

According to some commentators it points towards the infidels and polytheists, though there is reference to Moosa (a.s.) and Taurat in the reply thus indicating that the Jews are the subject and not the polytheists.

  2. 2

It is regarding the beginning of the Prophetic mission, while actually the Prophet (s.a.) is the prophet of the worlds. His message is not restricted to Mecca and the surrounding areas. Probably that is indicated by the phrase ‘Man Hawlaha’ (an those who are around it). Otherwise nothing else would have been mentioned with Ummul Qura (Mother of the cities).

  3. 3

It refers to the physical return. (Sa’ad). That the first creation was not restricted to the soul. The physical body was also present therein.

  4. Benefit

The 91st ayat proves that the major confrontation of the infidels against the prophets was their rejection of their divine message, so that they could avoid the acceptance of their prophethood.

By refuting this behaviour the Holy Quran has declared that the call: “There was no news and no revelation descended” is not a call of Islam. It was a slogan of the disbelievers uttered by a Muslim and its opposition was indeed necessary.
