Makkan165 verses

6:27Were you to see when they are brought to a halt by the Fire, whereupon they will say, ‘If only we were sent back [into the world]! Then we will not deny the signs of our Lord, and we will be among the faithful!’

6:28Indeed, what they used to hide before has now become evident to them. But were they to be sent back they would revert to what they were forbidden, and they are indeed liars.1

6:29They say, ‘There is nothing but our life of this world, and we shall not be resurrected.’

6:30Were you to see when they are brought to a halt before their Lord. He will say, ‘Is this not a fact?’ They will say, ‘Yes, by our Lord!’ He will say, ‘So taste the punishment because of what you used to deny.’2

6:31They are certainly losers who deny the encounter with Allah. When the Hour overtakes them suddenly, they will say, ‘Alas for us, for what we neglected in it!’ And they will bear their burdens on their backs. Look! Evil is what they bear!3

6:32The life of the world is nothing but play and diversion, and the abode of the Hereafter is surely better for those who are Godwary. Do you not exercise your reason?4

6:33We certainly know that what they say grieves you. Yet it is not you that they deny, but it is Allah’s signs that the wrongdoers impugn.

6:34Apostles were certainly denied before you, yet they patiently bore being denied and tormented until Our help came to them. Nothing can change the words of Allah, and there have certainly come to you some of the accounts of the apostles.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 29

1.Infidels have given importance to worldly life and denied the day of resurrection, then Allah drew their attention towards the importance of doomsday and painful chastisement and disclosed the truth of the worldly life and said: The world is nothing besides an entertainment. Hereafter is the original place where rewards will be granted to those who are God-fearing and the result of infidels will be severe and painful.

Verse 33

2.It is clarified if anyone is belied he will be hurt. But Allah turned their attention towards Him, to remove the sorrow of His Prophet (s.a.) and said that you are nothing but My Apostle. Your denial is My denial when We tolerate this falsification why you could not? The previous Apostles had tolerated their acts at that time and after they tolerated this We sent Our help. We do not send help without taking a trial of patience.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

‘Maa’ stands for the punishment of the Hereafter that they used to deny. And even if they are sent back I they would again deny it.

  2. 2

It shows that people would be allowed to speak up on the Day of Judgement but it will not serve any purpose because false oaths will not serve them.

  3. 3

Baghtatan - suddenly or abruptly. Though the judgement will last a day it is compared to an hour due to the swiftness of Allah’s accounting. ‘Awzaar’ is the plural of wizr - it means a burden. That is, the people shall be like the beasts of burden. The difference is that they shall be carrying the burden of their sins.

  4. 4

Laeb and Lahw - both are useless pursuits. The difference is that Laeb gets one a feeling of momentary gratification while even this is not achieved in Lahw, and the person here is absolutely unheeding.

  5. Benefit

The word of ‘Kizb’ with wishing seems to be strange in 28th ayat because wish is kind of desire while Kizb is related to information. The likely explanation is that it is the news of doing good deeds in anticipation of rewards and from the aspect of information these unjust people have been called liars.
