Makkan165 verses

6:19Say, ‘What thing is greatest as witness?’ Say, ‘Allah! [He is] witness between me and you, and this Quran has been revealed to me that I may warn thereby you and whomever it may reach.’ ‘Do you indeed bear witness that there are other gods besides Allah?’ Say, ‘I do not bear witness [to any such thing].’ Say, ‘Indeed He is the One God, and I indeed disown what you associate [with Him].’12

6:20Those whom We have given the Book recognize him just as they recognize their sons. Those who have ruined their souls will not have faith.

6:21Who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies His signs? Indeed the wrongdoers will not be felicitous.

6:22On the day when We gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners [to Allah] ‘Where are your partners that you used to claim?’

6:23Then their only excuse will be to say, ‘By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists.’3

6:24Look, how they forswear themselves, and what they used to fabricate has forsaken them!

6:25There are some of them who prick up their ears at you, but We have cast veils on their hearts lest they should understand it, and a deafness into their ears; and though they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. When they come to you, to dispute with you, the faithless say, ‘These are nothing but myths of the ancients.’45

6:26They dissuade [others] from [following] him, and [themselves] avoid him; yet they destroy no one except themselves, but they are not aware.*

Commentary on this passage

Verse 19

1.The Holy Quran is the total collection of knowledge and the commands of the Holy Quran are not concerned with a particular period or angels or a community. And the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) makes people fear of His wrath through the Holy Quran. And whenever and wherever the Holy Quran will go, the Prophethood will go along with it and in this way the status of the Prophet’s Prophethood is of an all encompassing nature.

Verse 20

2.However, or the expression of the grandeur of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) it should first be mentioned about the fathers and forefathers instead of children, but this is Quranic eloquence that the Holy Quran has mentioned about the children first so that the world can be aware that the relation of father and forefather is not so certain as much as the relation of children is certain and convincing. And hypocrites also kept more certainty about the matter of their children whether they knew about their ancestors or not.

Verse 25

3.The weapons of mischief and wickedness are unlimited and are difficult to imagine. Infidels and polytheists could not explain the eloquence of the Holy Quran and blamed, that the Holy Quran is only a book of stories. The unjust people did not take pain to think that there is a vast difference between the common stories and the Holy Quran. It cannot be said that the Holy Quran is a story book. The Holy Quran is the best symbol of knowledge, lecture and advice. Humans can bring a great revolution in their life through it.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Replying to queries formed by ones own.elf indicates that there is no other reply for those who may oppose it. Like Allah says: for whom is the kingdom? And then Himself replies.

  2. 2

This shows that Quran is not for a particular period and neither is the Messengership of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) limited to a particular age.

  3. 3

‘Fitna’ means examination, difficulty, disbelief, sin, deviation. calamity and excuses. The last meaning is most appropriate here.

  4. 4

It is the effect of disbelief that the eyes are veiled and the ears have deafened. Otherwise Allah does not block the way of anyone’s guidance, and neither does it befit his exalted status to do so.

  5. 5

It is the plural of Istoor, That is baseless stories and tales. According to some people it is one like the example of Ababeels.

  6. *

The 26th ayat continues to speak of the polytheists though some cohorts of Bani Umayyah have twisted it to mean Abu Talib (a.s.), that he used to stop the people from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) while he himself kept aloof from him. Which is absolutely against historical and a clear announcement of Umayyad mischief
