Verses 125–130

6. Al-An'aam · The Cattle

Makkan165 verses

6:125Whomever Allah desires to guide, He opens his breast to Islam, and whomever He desires to lead astray, He makes his breast narrow and straitened as if he were climbing to a height. Thus does Allah lay [spiritual] defilement on those who do not have faith.1

6:126This is the straight path of your Lord. We have already elaborated the signs for a people who take admonition.

6:127For them shall be the abode of peace near their Lord and He will be their guardian because of what they used to do.

6:128On the day He will gather them all together, [He will say], ‘O company of jinn! You claimed many of the humans.’ Their friends from among the humans will say, ‘Our Lord, we used each other, and we completed our term which You had appointed for us.’ He will say, ‘The Fire is your abode, to remain in it [forever], except what Allah may wish.’ Indeed your Lord is all-wise, all-knowing.2

6:129That is how We make the wrongdoers one another’s friends because of what they used to earn.

6:130‘O company of jinn and humans! Did there not come to you apostles from yourselves, recounting to you My signs and warning you of the encounter of this Day?’ They will say, ‘We testify against ourselves.’ The life of this world had deceived them, and they will testify against themselves that they had been faithless.3

Commentary on this passage

Verse 125

1.Fakhruddin Razi on the basis of his school of thought has tried to prove that Allah is responsible for both guidance and deviation. Allah guides some and misleads others. Though this is not mentioned in this verse. Only the conditions are described for both in this verse. The heart expands by giving of the guidance and the heart niggards in being misled. Now where does this guidance come from and what is the source of deviation, this matter is not discussed in this verse and this verse has no connection with it. The Holy Quran has mentioned time and again that Man himself is responsible for his deeds.

Verse 128

2.The satans of man and jinn co-operate with each other in that they get benefits from each other. If people obey the jinns, they become very rich and jinns open new ways to fulfill their desires and pleasures and they get benefits. In the end they both will be disgusted of each other and both will have to remain in hell. Similarly in every Muslim era the actions of rulers and subjects appear similar to the devils. While they give oath and let them rule they collect the wealth of the nation for personal enjoyment; but then the end of both will be same.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

In the ancient age climbing to the sky was an idiom of having undertaken something difficult. Now in the age of scientific development it is found that if one travels to a height there is a feeling of pressure in the chest. This is the greatest eloquence and meaningfulness of Quran.

  2. 2

Maa’shar is a collective noun and a plural for which there is no singular word. It denotes a group of satans.

  3. 3

It denotes that the sending of Prophets is a conclusive proof and that without a conclusive argument the Almighty does not send punishment.

  4. Benefit

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was asked regarding the expansion of the chest. He said that it was light which the Almighty created in ones heart and as a result the understanding of that person broadens. Its sign is that the person becomes aloof from the abode of deceit and becomes attentive to the abode of eternity and prepares for death without any delay.
