6. Al-An'aam · The Cattle

Makkan165 verses

6:102That is Allah, your Lord, there is no god except Him, the creator of all things; so worship Him. He watches over all things.

6:103The sights do not apprehend Him, yet He apprehends the sights, and He is the All-attentive, the All-aware.1

6:104[Say,] ‘Certainly insights have come to you from your Lord. So whoever sees, it is to the benefit of his own soul, and whoever remains blind, it is to its detriment, and I am not a keeper over you.’

6:105Thus do We paraphrase the signs variously, lest they should say, ‘You have received instruction,’ and so that We may make it clear for a people who have knowledge.2

6:106Follow that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, there is no god except Him, and turn away from the polytheists.

6:107Had Allah wished they would not have ascribed partners [to Him]. We have not made you a caretaker for them, nor is it your duty to watch over them.

6:108Do not abuse those whom they invoke besides Allah, lest they should abuse Allah out of hostility, without any knowledge. That is how to every people We have made their conduct seem decorous. Then their return will be to their Lord and He will inform them concerning what they used to do.3

6:109They swear by Allah with solemn oaths that were a sign to come to them they would surely believe in it. Say, ‘These signs are only from Allah,’ and what will bring home to you that they will not believe even if they came?4

6:110We transform their hearts and their visions as they did not believe in it the first time, and We leave them bewildered in their rebellion.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 103

1.There are some misunderstandings about Allah’s wonderful creation from the time of Moosa (a.s.) the only difference that first infidels were revealing was that Allah should be visible and now Muslims also repeat the same. Allah the Creator clarified this matter categorically that His elegance is not favourable for vision and He cannot come into your target and He then pointed out: He can see you and you can’t escape from His range.

Verse 108

2.This is the most excellent morality of Islam that we can guess His practical strategy, while He keeps watch of man’s weakness. If you abuse their gods, they would also abuse Allah and whoever do so will be an accused.

Infidels demanded every so often for miracles, and said show us miracles of their choice, then we will believe in you. So Allah clarified the dignity of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) that his duty is to convey His messages to you and not miracles. All the miracles are under His control and We will not place the miracles before you. As We know your ending, and we cannot adhere to your desires.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

It is the peak of eloquence that before the word’ Lateef the proof of the sentence is given and by the word ‘Khabeer’ for the next sentence.

  2. 2

The infidels alleged that Quran was not a Divine revelation. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) had learnt it from someone. The Almighty mentions various ayats for the concluding of proofs. That if after this they wish to make such allegation they can go ahead. At least it has become clear to the people who understand.

  3. 3

The Almighty has created human nature in such a way that every community regards its actions good otherwise they would not present falsehood disguised as something nice. It shall be against his reason and action.

Benefit: The 108th ayat in the greatest political and moral teaching of Islam. Firstly curses and criticism have no beneficial effects. Secondly, the ignorant people will begin to openly speak ill of Allah, and the cause of His behaviour shall be the Muslim who has instigated this. Hence it is not at all advisable.

  4. 4

That is the Almighty is aware that they would not bring faith even after witnessing the miracle.
