Madinan22 verses

58:12O you who have faith! When you converse privately with the Apostle, offer a charity before your private talk. That is better for you and purer. But if you cannot afford [to make the offering], then Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful.1

58:13Were you dismayed by having to offer charities before your private talks? Since you did not do it, and Allah has excused you [for not be able to comply], now maintain the prayer and pay the zakat, and obey Allah and His Apostle. Allah is well aware of what you do.

58:14Have you not regarded those who befriend a people at whom Allah is wrathful? They neither belong to you, nor to them, and they swear false oaths [that they are with you] and they know.2

58:15Allah has prepared a severe punishment for them. Evil indeed is what they used to do.

58:16They make a shield of their oaths and bar [people] from the way of Allah; so there is a humiliating punishment for them.

58:17Their possessions and children will not avail them in any way against Allah. They shall be the inmates of the Fire and they shall remain in it [forever].

58:18The day when Allah will raise them all together, they will swear to Him, just like they swear to you [now], supposing that they stand on something. Look! They are indeed liars!3

58:19Satan has prevailed upon them, so he has caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are Satan’s confederates. Look! Indeed, it is Satan’s confederates who are the losers!

58:20Indeed those who oppose Allah and His Apostle—they will be among the most abased.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 12

1.When some Muslims made their company with Prophet (s.a.) as means to enhance their position this prevented the poor to enter. Allah devolved this restriction, that first give Sadaqah (charity) then you come to the gathering of the Prophet (s.a.) so that it becomes evident that who values, how much his companionship with the Prophet (s.a.). But it is a matter of great surprise that according to the confession of the writer of exegesis like Fakhruddin Razi and Tabari on this ayat no one acted but Ali (a.s.). Hazrat Ali (a.s.) had with him only one Dinar. He got small change of ten Dirhams from that one Dinar, and gave one Dirham every time in Sadaqah and remained present in the meeting of the Prophet (s.a.). After which the order of that ayat was abrogated. And the secret of all the pretending persons whose companionship was talk of the town came into open. Let this be known that this ayat was towards those people, who fancied sticking around the Prophet (s.a.) without any purpose. It has no connection to those who did not wish to be counted amongst the pretenders of companionship. And they were aware of their own status also and used to be present whenever it was necessary, and after that they used to be busy with their other duties.

Verse 20

2.The believers should remember that the enemy of Allah and his Prophet (s.a.) can never be a person of honour and to consider him honourable is a proof of ones disbelief.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

Before the whisper how long the command of giving Sadaqah remained is a matter of debate among the commentators. But the most people estimation is of ten days. That it is possible this test could be held on a single day or could be held all at once. After which those who do not act upon may be criticised and they may be regarded as sinners and their forgiveness may be announced.

  2. 1

This is not a government tax or fee that is collected for the treasury of Kings. It is Sadaqah and it is haraam for the Prophet (s.a.) and his progeny. It means the upbringing of poor and destitute people. That the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) used to subject himself to secret utterances to benefit the poor. Otherwise the secret talks would have been prohibited from the beginning and there would have been no justification for the same.

  3. 2

These are hypocrites who are secretly with the Jews. And these wretched people are neither among the believers nor apparently among the Jews.

  4. 3

This is an example of the worst thinking of hypocrites. They want to deceive Allah like they deceive the believers. And that too not in this world but in the Hereafter where the greatest people will not get any relief. And the holy saints will be trembling in the fear of Allah.

  5. Benefit

Hizbul1ah and Hizb-e-Shaitan are not the names of special groups. They are general terms for two types of characters. Those who fully obey and earnestly love the people for the sake of Allah alone. They are in Hizbullah and those who blindly follow the Shaitan are from Hizbush Shaitan.
