Makkan85 verses

40:50They will say, ‘Had not your apostles brought you manifest proofs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will say, ‘Then invoke [Him] yourselves.’ But the invocations of the faithless only go awry.

40:51Indeed We shall help Our apostles and those who have faith in the life of the world and on the day when the witnesses rise up,1

40:52the day when the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, the curse will lie on them, and for them will be the ills of the [ultimate] abode.2

40:53Certainly We gave guidance to Moses and We gave the Children of Israel the Book as a legacy,3

40:54as guidance and admonition for those who possess intellect.

40:55So be patient! Allah’s promise is indeed true. Plead [Allah] for forgiveness of your sin, and celebrate the praise of your Lord morning and evening.*

40:56Indeed those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority that may have come to them—there is [an ambition for] greatness in their breasts, which they will never attain. So seek the protection of Allah; indeed, He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.

40:57The creation of the heavens and the earth is surely more prodigious than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know.

40:58The blind one and the seer are not equal, neither are the evildoers and those who have faith and do righteous deeds. Little is the admonition that you take!

Commentary on this passage

Verse 51

1.Most surely Allah helps His believers and sincere people and does not leave them alone but it is not so that true believer does not escape from troubles. Calamity is necessary to show the talent of patience and calamities derive inevitable status of the highest perfection. Hence help of Allah is conditional that people should help Allah first and help Allah’s religion, certainly not the seeker of trouble. After that Allah grants him external power and sometimes permanent honour that his grave becomes preferable in the world and enemies are destroyed forever.

Verse 53

2.Kashaf the exegesis of the Holy Quran has proved that Taurat is not that Holy book that has been inherited by Bani Israel and its great proof is this that present exegesist of Taurat has quoted from Qamusul Kitab that in Hebrew the meaning of Israel is not people of Allah but it means against of Allah because according to Taurat Yaqoob (a.s.) argued with Allah the whole night therefore they are known as Israel and also today it is the duty of every Jew to fight against Allah the whole night so that Allah would come to them according to their desire.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

On the day of Qiyamat all the witnesses will arise for testifying whether they are prophets and messengers or angels and righteous people or the organs and physical parts for man himself who are going to testify against him.

  2. 2

Guidance denotes apparently those miracles through which the divine appointment is proved.

Benefit: The 52nd ayat mentions that excuses will be useless and in Surah Mursalat it is mentioned that they would not be permitted to give excuses. The apparent contradiction between these two ayats can be explained that either the not giving of permission is aimed to make them useless or this would be in different stages. That on some stages there would be no permission to speak and in some stages they will speak but it would not be of any use.

  3. 3

Isteghfar is itself a proper act of worship and to consider oneself as having shortcomings is the proof of the perfection of character. Thus Isteghfar cannot be made a proof of sin and it is not necessary that sin has really been committed. Everyone should consider himself to be deficient before the Almighty so that pride does not come to him from any side.

  4. Benefit

The 55th ayat is a complete model plan for success of man. That first man should resort to self control in calamities. Then keeping his shortcomings in his mind he should seek forgiveness and day and night should glorify Allah so that he begins to perceive his owns purity.
