39:48The evils of what they had earned will appear to them, and they will be besieged by what they used to deride.

39:49When distress befalls man, he supplicates Us. Then, when We grant him a blessing from Us, he says, ‘I was given it by virtue of [my] knowledge.’ Indeed, it is a test, but most of them do not know.1

39:50Those who were before them [also] said that, but what they used to earn did not avail them.

39:51So the evils of what they had earned visited them, and as for the wrongdoers among these, the evils of what they earn shall be visited on them and they will not frustrate [Allah].

39:52Do they not know that Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes and tightens it [for whomever He wishes]? There are indeed signs in that for a people who have faith.

39:53Say [that Allah declares,] ‘O My servants who have committed excesses against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah will forgive all sins. Indeed, He is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful.*

39:54Turn penitently to Him and submit to Him before the punishment overtakes you, whereupon you will not be helped.*

39:55Follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord, before the punishment overtakes you suddenly while you are unaware.’

39:56Lest anyone should say, ‘Alas for my negligence in the vicinage of Allah! Indeed I was among those who ridiculed.’23

Commentary on this passage

Verse 53

1.Despair of Allah’s mercy is a great crime and a mortal sin and it only means that a man presumes that a sin can be greater than mercy of Allah that Allah Himself is deemed powerless to forgive. Anyhow this is an improper consideration. But it never means that a man makes fun of blessings of Allah and profers excuses to do sin. This is also a crime and to become careless from chastisement of Allah is also a sinful action. Islam is convinced of counter balance that a man feels about the chastisement of Allah in his mind so that a sin should not be committed and should not forget about the mercy of Allah. If a sin is committed by mistake he should not be disappointed from Allah’s mercy; if he forgets about Allah’s mercy and decides that he has to go into hell at any rate then his sins will increase. To prevent sin, Allah has announced deliverance except that the deliverance is in His hands. He will forgive whomsoever He likes and will send to hell whomsoever He wishes. No force or compulsion is there for Him to forgive.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

The fact is that most of the divine bounties are nothing but tests for human beings and man is under the impression that these are the rewards for his proximity to Allah or that it is the power of his knowledge. He forgets that knowledge is subservient to truth and not the cause of truths. If the Almighty does not desire to bestow the bounties knowledge cannot even invent a single particle in the world. Knowledge is the unraveling of the existing things. It is not the creation of something from nothing. Or in other words invention is from Providence and not the result of knowledge. And the Providence is at the discretion of Allah.

  2. Benefit

The 53rd ayat has provided numerous advices and consolations to the sinners : (1) The ayat begins with ‘My Servant’. (2) Instead of injustice and oppression there is mention of excess (Israaf). (3) Ala anfusehim is to inform of the consequences. (4) La Taqnutoo is a good news. (5) Rahmatullah is a perfect good tiding. (6) The promise of forgiveness is a consoling promise. (7) Jamee-an is the perfection of beneficence. (8) Ghafoor-o-Raheem is the completion of the description of Mercy.

  3. Benefit

The 54th ayat mentions the conditions for Maghferat and this chapter is Meccan. Therefore it is not applicable for the wild killer of Hamza (r.a.). The people of intellect should ponder upon this.

  4. 2

‘Jamballah’ is the right and obedience of Allah and everything which on the basis of its perfection of proximity reaches His realm can be called ‘Jamballah’. It is on this basis that one of the titles of Ali (a.s.) is Jamballah.

  5. 3

The root of this is ‘Inni kunto’. That is ‘in’ is not conditional it is the reduced form of ‘inna’.
