Makkan45 verses

35:19The blind one and the seer are not equal,1

35:20nor darkness and light;

35:21nor shade and torrid heat;

35:22nor are the living equal to the dead. Indeed Allah makes whomever He wishes to hear, and you cannot make those who are in the graves hear you.*

35:23You are but a warner.

35:24Indeed We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and as a warner; and there is not a nation but a warner has passed in it.

35:25If they impugn you, those before them have impugned [likewise]: their apostles brought them manifest proofs, [holy] writs, and illuminating scriptures.

35:26Then I seized the faithless. So how was My rebuttal!

35:27Have you not regarded that Allah sends down water from the sky, with which We produce fruits of diverse hues. And in the mountains are stripes, white and red, of diverse hues, and [others] pitch black?2

35:28And of humans and beasts and cattle there are likewise diverse hues. Only those of Allah’s servants having knowledge fear Him. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-forgiving.3

35:29Indeed those who recite the Book of Allah and maintain the prayer, and spend secretly and openly out of what We have provided them, expect a commerce that will never go bankrupt,

Commentary on this passage

Verse 24

1.It is a fact that Allah makes some arrangement of guidance for all communities and astrayed people. Sometimes He sends a prophet and sometimes a messenger and uses other resources so that His favour is completed on them and nobody can say that Allah has made no arrangement for their guidance and it is said about polytheist Arabs that the Prophet (s.a.) was sent there when there was no one to warn them. It means there was no prophet or messenger among them and no arrangement was there for their guidance.

Today, there is neither Prophet nor Messenger but his descendant is alive and present and he is in occultation and his companions continue his work.

Verse 28

2.It is true that Allah has created every creature in a different fashion. Whether he is terrestrial or aquatic, plantation or human but we find attribute of fear of God only in learned persons and fear of God is the base of perfection and sincerity.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Belief and disbelief can be distinguished by various companions. The Kafir is blind and the believers are seeing. Kufr is darkness and belief is light. Belief is a shade and Kufr is poisonous wind. The believers are living and the disbelievers are living corpses. Kufr is a grave in which one is buried alive.

  2. Benefit

Some stupid people have concluded from the 22nd ayat that even the holy saints cannot hear and it is useless to call them, while the ayat is concerned with the infidels. The saints and martyrs possess a special life bestowed by Allah. Also this is about normal circumstances. In extraordinary circumstances the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) conversed with the infidels killed in battle of Badr and Muslims are supposed to give Talqeen to the dead body.

  3. 2

Jadad - It is plural of Ghareeb. That is very very black.

  4. 3

Dawab are all creatures that crawl the earth. Anaam, usually denote camels, cows, buffaloes, sheep and goat. Regarding the scholars, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) has said that there should be compatibility between their word and deeds. Otherwise, references from books carmot be termed as knowledge.

  5. Benefit

Tijarat Lan Taboor: It is a transaction in which the seller is man and buyer, Allah. The commodity is good deeds and the price is Paradise and satisfaction of Allah. What can be a higher business than this? That the owner is himself the purchaser and paying a price a thousand times more than its worth.
